Suspect Arrested in Colorado for Triple Homicide of Women in Utah
Authorities have announced the arrest of a man accused of a brutal series of crimes resulting in the deaths of three women in Utah, with the suspect now in custody in Colorado. The arrest was made public on Thursday, following a rapid investigation that spanned multiple states.
Details of the Crimes and Investigation
The suspect, identified as Ivan Miller, 22, from Blakesburg, Iowa, is alleged to have killed a woman in southern Utah, stolen her vehicle, and driven it to a trailhead near Capitol Reef National Park. There, he is accused of murdering two women who were hiking together before fleeing in one of their vehicles. The events unfolded late Wednesday afternoon in small ranching and farming communities that are popular with tourists in summer due to their proximity to national parks.
Lt. Cameron Roden of the Utah Highway Patrol stated that authorities were alerted to the killings by the husbands of the hikers, who went to the trail looking for them. The husbands reported one vehicle missing from the trailhead and were unaware of the ownership of the other vehicle. This led investigators to discover the first victim after identifying the owner of the vehicle, with police tape surrounding a brick home in Lyman as evidence was gathered.
Tracking and Arrest of the Suspect
Using license plate readers and vehicle tracking services, authorities followed Miller's path from Utah through northern Arizona and into Pagosa Springs, a mountain town in southwestern Colorado, where he abandoned the stolen vehicle. After a short search, Miller was found and taken into custody. He is currently being held on suspicion of carrying a concealed weapon, a misdemeanor, with his first court appearance scheduled for Friday afternoon in Colorado.
Miller is being represented by the Colorado Public Defender’s office, with Justin Bogan, who heads the office in the judicial district covering Pagosa Springs, confirming representation but declining further comment. Attempts to contact possible relatives of Miller via voicemail were not immediately returned on Thursday.
Victims and Motive
Officials have not released the names of the victims but described the hikers as friends in their 30s and 60s, and the other woman as in her 80s. The hikers had no connection to the elderly woman, who lived in a home in Wayne County about 10 miles (16 kilometers) from the trail. Roden emphasized that there is no indication Miller had any prior connection to the victims, and investigators are still looking into when he arrived in Utah and his activities before the killings.
As of now, no motive has been established for the murders. Roden suggested that the suspect may have targeted the women merely for "convenience," rather than any specific reason. Before the arrest, residents in Wayne County were advised to remain vigilant, and nearby schools were closed on Thursday. Authorities had issued a warning for people not to approach a white Subaru Outback they were seeking in connection with the case.
Ongoing Investigation and Support
The State Bureau of Investigation and Crime Lab are supporting the homicide investigation, with multiple scenes being processed in Torrey, Utah, and the surrounding area. The case continues to develop as more details emerge from the ongoing probe into this tragic incident.
