Teenage Defendant Denies Murder Charge in Tragic Stabbing of Nine-Year-Old Girl

A 16-year-old boy has formally pleaded not guilty to the murder of nine-year-old Aria Thorpe, who was fatally stabbed at her home in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset. The defendant, who cannot be named due to his age, entered the plea during a hearing at Bristol Crown Court on Friday.

Details of the Alleged Crime and Legal Proceedings

Aria Thorpe was pronounced dead after police were called to the Mead Vale area of Weston-super-Mare at 6.09pm on December 15. An earlier inquest at Avon Coroner’s Court revealed that the young girl died from a single stab wound to her chest. During the 20-minute court hearing, prosecutor Ray Tully KC outlined that the trial is scheduled to begin on June 15, with an estimated duration of two weeks.

Defence counsel Andrew Langdon KC represented the teenage boy at the proceeding. Judge Martin Picton confirmed that reporting restrictions, which prevent the identification of the defendant because of his age, will remain in place. The boy has been remanded into custody and will stand trial at Bristol Crown Court as planned.

Heartfelt Tributes from Aria’s Grieving Family

In emotional statements released after her death, Aria’s family described her as a vibrant and beloved child. Her father, Tom Thorpe, paid tribute to his daughter, calling her a "brave, kind-hearted and a beautiful innocent soul." He shared poignant memories, including their family trip to Disneyland and her love for maths, which she affectionately referred to as "numbers."

Tom Thorpe expressed: "It's hard to put into words how devastating it is, our little Aria, that you're up there with the angels looking over us. You will be greatly missed, you special little angel. A life gone far too early but I hope a life lived well."

Aria’s maternal family also issued a tribute, remembering her as "the most beautiful little soul - happy-go-lucky, full of light, and joy." They highlighted her passion for singing, dancing, and dressing up, noting how she adored emulating her mother. The family has requested privacy as they navigate this profound loss, while acknowledging the support from friends and the local community.

Background and Community Impact

Aria was found deceased at a property on Lime Close in Weston-super-Mare. Tragically, she had celebrated her ninth birthday just two weeks prior to her death with a Kpop Demon Hunters-themed party, surrounded by friends. The post-mortem examination confirmed the cause of death as a single stab wound, underscoring the brutality of the incident.

This case has deeply affected the Somerset town, drawing attention to issues of youth violence and legal protections for minors. As the trial date approaches, the community continues to mourn the loss of a young life described by her family as full of potential and happiness.
