A Texas father has shot dead a suspected carjacker in a parking lot in Garland, Texas, after the man attempted to force his way into the family's vehicle, which contained several children. Police have confirmed that the driver acted in self-defence and will not face charges.

The confrontation unfolded on Sunday afternoon when the suspect first crashed into two vehicles, abandoned a green car at a nearby petrol station, and then began trying to force his way into other cars, according to Lt. Pedro Barineau of the Garland Police Department. The suspect then crossed the street to another parking lot and approached a white car occupied by several children and two female adults.
The driver fought off the suspect as a young boy fled to safety. During the struggle, the driver retrieved his firearm, moved to the passenger side, and fired more than 10 rounds, striking the suspect. The driver remained at the scene and surrendered his weapon to police.
Police and Witness Reactions
Authorities are treating the shooting as a case of self-defence. "We are looking at this as a self-defense case," Barineau said. "We're also looking into why this suspect did what he did." Police confirmed no one inside the targeted vehicle was injured.
Witness Taylor Standfield, a nearby resident, said the driver acted to protect his family. "I have three kids. I'm gonna do whatever it takes to keep them safe. That kind of stuff is split-second," he said. Another witness, Tatiana Starks, manager of Garland Smoke and Vape, noted the suspect appeared to be in a troubled state. "You could definitely tell that he was not in his right state of mind," she said. "I'm just glad that the man was able to protect himself and his family."
