Trey Songz Initiates Legal Proceedings Against Kansas City Police Department
American R&B vocalist Trey Songz has formally filed a lawsuit against the Kansas City Police Department, stemming from a contentious incident that took place five years ago during a high-profile NFL playoff game. The legal action centres on events that unfolded at Arrowhead Stadium in January 2021, when the singer attended the AFC Championship clash between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills.
Allegations of Harassment and Police Misconduct
According to court documents obtained by the Daily Mail, the singer, whose legal name is Tremaine Aldon Neverson, was seated at the stadium when he became the target of sustained heckling from other spectators. The lawsuit contends that this verbal abuse, which allegedly occurred "because of his notoriety", rapidly intensified into direct threats and harassment, prompting the involvement of stadium security personnel.
The legal filing presents a stark account of what followed. It asserts that instead of providing protection from what are described as "unruly, aggressive, and intoxicated attendees", the responding security staff and police officers subjected Neverson to physical assault, wrongful arrest, handcuffing, and detention. The singer was subsequently jailed and faced charges of trespassing, resisting arrest, and assaulting a police officer. Notably, all these criminal charges were later dismissed in their entirety.
Claims of Excessive Force and Professional Damage
The civil suit levies serious accusations against both the Kansas City Police Department and the security contractor, Whelan Event Services. It claims they acted "carelessly and negligently" and "without due care" on the day, directly causing or contributing to the singer's injuries. Specific allegations include the use of excessive force, wrongful detainment, and unlawful arrest.
Neverson's legal team argues that these actions resulted in "serious, permanent, and progressive injuries to his person, and professional reputation." While the precise financial damages being sought have not been publicly disclosed in the initial filing, the case seeks compensation for the alleged harm suffered. The Daily Mail has reached out to the Kansas City Police Department for an official statement regarding the lawsuit.
Broader Context of Legal Challenges
This lawsuit is not the only legal matter currently involving the "Say Aah" singer. In a separate and more recent development, Neverson was arrested in December 2025 in New York City. He faces charges of felony criminal mischief and misdemeanour assault related to two alleged altercations at nightclubs.
Regarding these New York charges, the singer's attorneys have stated that in one incident, he was "confronted by individuals who instigated a confrontation and attempted to surround him" before his security team intervened. They have emphasised his cooperation with authorities, adding, "He is cooperating fully and looks forward to the facts coming to light." The Kansas City lawsuit, however, remains a distinct and separate legal battle rooted in the 2021 stadium event.
