Uber Eats Driver Killed in Car Theft Attempt on Last Delivery

A tragic incident in Chicago has left a family shattered after a 28-year-old Uber Eats driver was killed during an attempted car theft on what was supposed to be his final delivery of the night. Daniel Figueroa, a hardworking father figure who balanced multiple jobs to support his loved ones, never made it home to celebrate his girlfriend's son's birthday.

A Devastating Loss for Family

Sandra Guerrero, Figueroa's girlfriend, expressed her profound grief in an emotional interview, stating she feels completely lost and confused by the sudden tragedy. "I'm confused. I'm lost. I'm sad. I don't know what to do," Guerrero told reporters. "I shouldn't have to picture my boyfriend like that. Somebody who I wanted to marry."

The couple had planned a special day for Guerrero's son's birthday, but those plans were tragically cut short. "Today, it's my son's birthday. We had the whole day planned out for him to spend it with him. And it, just, I can't believe it right now," she added through tears.

The Fatal Confrontation

According to police sources and surveillance footage, the incident occurred around 2:05am on Monday in the Austin neighborhood near Loretto Hospital. Figueroa had just completed a food delivery to a doctor at the hospital when three suspects approached his van in an attempted theft.

Authorities revealed that the confrontation turned violent when the suspects dragged Figueroa approximately half a block as he tried to enter his vehicle. The individuals then fled the scene, leaving Figueroa lying unresponsive in the middle of West Flournoy Street.

Hospital workers who discovered Figueroa immediately alerted authorities and provided crucial surveillance footage showing the entire incident. Figueroa was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital but was pronounced dead less than an hour later.

Police Investigation Progress

Chicago police have launched a homicide investigation and made significant progress in the case. On Monday afternoon, authorities took a woman into custody who was found behind the wheel of Figueroa's stolen van, which was also recovered at the scene.

While police haven't released official suspect descriptions, sources indicate the surveillance video appears to show two women and one man involved in the incident. A person of interest remains in custody as detectives from Area Four continue their investigation.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office is still conducting an autopsy to determine the exact cause and manner of Figueroa's death, with results pending at this time.

A Family's Heartbreak

Figueroa's father, Carlos Figueroa, shared his anguish over losing his youngest son in such a violent manner. "I hope my son didn't suffer. He didn't deserve this. Not one bit. He was a good kid," the grieving father told reporters. "He was on his way home. This was going to be his last stop. He was just trying to do something for himself out there."

Figueroa grew up in Downers Grove and continued living there with Guerrero and her child, whom he loved and treated as his own. Family members described him as a devoted family man who worked tirelessly to provide for his household, juggling shifts at Amazon with his Uber Eats deliveries.

"He was my main provider for our home and the person I shared my life with," Guerrero explained, highlighting the emotional and financial void left by his passing.

Community and Corporate Response

Loretto Hospital issued a statement expressing condolences to Figueroa's family and loved ones, confirming their full cooperation with authorities. "Our prayers and condolences go out to the individual's family and loved ones," the statement read. "Our focus remains on supporting the safety, health, and well-being of the community we serve during this difficult time."

Uber also released a statement acknowledging the tragedy: "We're incredibly saddened by this tragic loss, and our thoughts are with their family and loved ones as they navigate this unimaginably difficult time. We've reached out to police and will assist them however we can."

Financial and Emotional Aftermath

Guerrero has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral expenses, outstanding bills, and provide short-term financial stability for her family. The fundraiser highlights the sudden burden created by Figueroa's death, noting that "his passing has left not only an emotional void, but also a sudden financial burden that I never expected to face."

Figueroa's mother, Eleanor Rivera, shared her grief on social media, writing: "I still don't have words to share on the passing of my youngest son. He was my baby with a bond that no one could break. As this is a homicide under investigation, there is not much I can share, just that I will never have my son back in my arms."

Appeal for Justice

Figueroa's father has made a public plea for anyone with information about the incident to come forward anonymously through police channels. "This way, there can be some kind of justice for my son, and he didn't die in vain," he urged. "I would appreciate it."

The family remembers Figueroa as a kind-hearted individual who loved fishing—so much that he had a fishing pole tattooed on his finger—and who consistently put others before himself. His sudden and violent death has left a community in mourning and a family searching for answers during their darkest hours.
