New Footage Reveals Swiss Nightclub Fire Ignited by Sparklers Under Inflatable Ceiling
Newly surfaced footage provides a stark and chilling perspective on the tragic Swiss nightclub fire that claimed dozens of lives on New Year's Day. The video captures the precise moment a waitress, holding champagne bottles adorned with lit sparklers, inadvertently set a low inflatable ceiling ablaze inside the packed Le Constellation venue in the ski resort of Crans-Montana.
Rapid Spread of Flames as Crowd Remains Unaware
The footage lays bare the terrifying speed at which the fire took hold. As the waitress, wearing a helmet and carried on a man's shoulders through the cheering crowd, raises the sparklers towards the ceiling, flames instantly lick across the inflatable surface. Shockingly, instead of halting the celebration, the waitress continues her procession, with many revellers turning to follow her, their backs to the spreading inferno overhead.
This visual evidence hints at why dozens of partygoers did not immediately recognise the grave danger unfolding above them. Panic ensued as smoke filled the basement venue, with witnesses later describing scenes reminiscent of a horror movie as people burned and suffocated in a desperate rush to escape.
Deadly Aftermath and Ongoing Investigation
The inferno resulted in a devastating toll, killing 41 individuals and injuring 115 others. Swiss prosecutors have since launched a criminal investigation into the club's owners, Jacques and Jessica Moretti, a French couple who face serious charges including manslaughter by negligence, bodily harm by negligence, and arson by negligence. If convicted, they could face up to 20 years in prison.
The investigation has revealed troubling details about safety protocols at the establishment. During hearings, Jessica Moretti admitted that staff had never undergone fire evacuation drills, stating, "There were never any evacuation drills because nobody asked us to." She defended her actions on the night, claiming her priority was to raise the alarm and call emergency services promptly.
Families' Outrage and Demands for Justice
The tragedy has sparked profound grief and anger among the victims' families. In a recent confrontation outside the prosecutor's office in Sion, dozens of grieving relatives swarmed the Morettis, hurling insults and demanding accountability. One sobbing parent was heard yelling, "You killed my son, you killed 40 people, you will pay for this."
Family members of a 17-year-old victim named Trystan were particularly vocal. His mother, Vinciane Stucky, declared, "We will neither forgive nor forget," while his father, Christian Podoux, expressed the deep pain inflicted on all affected families. Trystan's younger siblings also attended, calling for Jessica Moretti to apologise and acknowledge the destruction caused.
Owners' Defence and Blame Shifting
In their defence, the Morettis have pointed blame towards their staff, including the waitress, Cyane, who perished in the fire. Leaked interview records indicate the couple described the sparkler display as "Cyane's show," with Jacques Moretti stating he did not forbid the act or provide specific safety instructions. "We didn't see the danger," he told prosecutors, adding that in ten years of operation, he never perceived any risk.
Despite the accusations, Jacques Moretti faced the angry crowd, asserting, "If we have to pay, we will pay. We are not the Mafia; we are workers. We will take responsibility, we will get to the bottom of this, we promise you, we are here to achieve justice." Jessica Moretti, appearing emotional, expressed understanding of the families' anger and hatred, reaffirming their availability for questions.
As the judicial process continues, this new footage serves as a harrowing reminder of the catastrophic consequences that can arise from a momentary lapse in safety awareness, leaving a community in mourning and a nation grappling with the need for stricter regulations in entertainment venues.
