Israeli Airstrikes Pound Iran and Lebanon as US Warns of Dramatic Surge

Intense Israeli airstrikes pounded the capitals of Iran and Lebanon early Friday, with the United States simultaneously striking an Iranian drone carrier at sea. This escalation intensifies the campaign targeting the Islamic Republic's fleet of warships, as US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warned the bombardment is "about to surge dramatically."

Broad-Scale Strikes on Tehran and Beirut

Israel's military announced it had initiated "a broad-scale wave of strikes" on Tehran, Iran's capital. Witnesses described the Israeli airstrikes as particularly intense, shaking homes in the area. Additional explosions were reported around the Iranian city of Kermanshah, a region housing multiple missile bases. The Israeli military claimed these strikes have already destroyed most of Iran's air defenses and missile launchers.

In Lebanon, where conflict has intensified between Israel and Iran-allied Hezbollah militants, Israel launched a series of airstrikes late Thursday into Friday. These targeted the southern suburbs of Beirut and other areas, causing panic as motorists jammed roads attempting to flee or seek shelter. The Israeli army issued urgent warnings urging residents to evacuate immediately, leading to the evacuation of two hospitals.

US Strikes Iranian Drone Carrier

The US military confirmed early Friday that it struck an Iranian drone carrier, setting the vessel ablaze. US Central Command released black-and-white footage showing the burning carrier, identified as the IRIS Shahid Bagheri. This converted container ship features a 180-meter-long runway for drones and can travel up to 22,000 nautical miles without refueling.

Admiral Brad Cooper, head of US Central Command, described the carrier as "roughly the size of a World War II aircraft carrier" and noted "it's on fire" during Friday briefings. Defense Secretary Hegseth provided few details but promised an upcoming surge involving "more fighter squadrons, more capabilities, more defensive capabilities, and more bomber pulses more frequently."

Regional Escalation and Casualties

The conflict has escalated to affect multiple countries across the Middle East. Early Friday, Iran fired missile and drone attacks into Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain—all nations hosting US forces. Qatar's Defense Ministry reported intercepting a drone attack targeting Al Udeid Air Base, while Saudi Arabia intercepted three ballistic missiles fired toward Prince Sultan Air Base.

In Bahrain, Iranian strikes targeted two hotels and a residential building, though no casualties were reported. Kuwait activated air defenses as missile and drone attacks breached its airspace. The war has resulted in significant casualties, with at least 1,230 people killed in Iran, more than 120 in Lebanon, around a dozen in Israel, and six US troops killed according to officials from those countries.

Political Developments and Diplomatic Tensions

US President Donald Trump urged Iranians to "help take back your country" during White House remarks on Thursday, promising "immunity" amid the war. In an interview with Axios, Trump suggested he should be involved in choosing Iran's new supreme leader to replace Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in the opening strikes of the war.

Iranian officials rejected any possibility of negotiations with the US. Ambassador Mojtaba Ferdousi Pour stated "there will be no trust in Trump" after previous nuclear deal talks failed and ended in war. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused the US Navy of committing "an atrocity at sea" for sinking the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena in the Indian Ocean, which killed at least 87 crew members.

Humanitarian Impact and International Response

The conflict has disrupted oil supplies, snarled global air travel, and created humanitarian crises across the region. In Lebanon, the health ministry reported the death toll has risen to 123 since hostilities resurged between Israel and Hezbollah. A spokesperson for the UN peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon confirmed peacekeepers had witnessed and heard clashes, including ground combat, as more Israeli forces moved across the border.

The situation remains volatile with no immediate resolution in sight as military actions continue to intensify across multiple fronts in the Middle East.
