Tragic Hiking Accident Claims Life of Georgia College Student
A promising University of Georgia student has died following a tragic hiking accident in Connecticut. William Cooper Gatch, 23, lost his life on April 6 while exploring Sleeping Giant State Park in Hamden with his sister, Whitley.
Emergency Response and Investigation
The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) received an emergency call around 11:45 am that day. "The hiker was found in the woods and unfortunately succumbed to his injuries at the scene," officials stated in their report. While preliminary investigations suggest the death was accidental, the official cause remains undetermined pending further examination.
A Life Cut Short
Gatch was a resident of Statesboro, Georgia, and an Agriculture Education student at the University of Georgia in Athens. He was just weeks away from graduation, having spent his final semester student teaching at Madison County High School. According to his obituary, "There were many things William loved in life, but the two that encompass it all are his habit of piddling and compassion for others."
His LinkedIn profile revealed a young man with diverse work experience, including positions as a landscaper, equipment operator, and Home Depot employee. He was also an active member of the Block and Bridle Club at the University of Georgia, which held a memorial in his honor on April 8.
Outdoor Enthusiast Remembered
Gatch had a deep connection with nature. "The outdoors was a place that calmed his soul and where he could find peace; a statement that maintains truth even for his final moments," his obituary poignantly noted. He often spent time fishing in his grandparents' pond after school or work.
Friends and family have flooded social media with tributes. One lifelong friend wrote, "He didn't have a bad bone in his body. He didn't know how to not help others. That was his love language." Another added, "He was a consistent presence, always the same. He had a way about him that you always knew he was there."
