Teacher Blames Italian Heritage for Inappropriate Conduct with Pupils

A former English teacher at a prestigious public school in Kent has attributed his inappropriate physical contact with students and requests for them to sing sexually suggestive song lyrics to his Italian heritage, describing himself as naturally "tactile." This defence emerged during a professional conduct panel hearing conducted by the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA).

Inappropriate Actions at Tonbridge School

James Coltella, who taught at Tonbridge School, was found to have engaged in serious misconduct, including touching pupils on their shoulders, knees, and legs during one-to-one meetings. One pupil, referred to as Pupil A, provided a detailed witness statement describing how Coltella would "walk up and down the line, searching for eye contact" and would touch his knee in a manner reminiscent of a comforting grandmother, rubbing his thumb as if to console him.

Furthermore, Coltella instructed students to sing sections from the Charlie Puth song 'Marvin Gaye,' which contains explicit lyrics such as "king size to ourselves" and "it's a Karma Sutra show and tell." Pupil A also reported that Coltella repeatedly asked for hugs, leading the student to eventually avoid the teacher altogether.

Panel Findings and Coltella's Defence

The TRA panel concluded that nine out of twenty-five allegations against Coltella were proven, constituting serious misconduct. The panel noted that his actions had a negative impact on Pupil A and another student, Pupil B, and that his teaching methods, driven by a "dogged determination to achieve academic success," were open to misinterpretation and failed to safeguard student welfare.

In his statement to the panel, Coltella acknowledged his errors, stating, "My Italian heritage and upbringing fostered a demonstrative manner; however, the need to think about how your actions are received by others has now been acutely understood." He expressed deep remorse for any emotional harm caused, insisting there was never any malicious intent, and emphasized that he only ever wanted the best for his students.

Outcome and Character References

Despite the serious findings, the panel decided not to ban Coltella from the teaching profession. This decision was influenced by numerous positive character references from teachers, parents, and pupils, who described him as "outstanding" and "inspirational." The panel acknowledged that while Coltella fell significantly short of professional standards, a prohibition order was not deemed necessary in this case.

The complaint that led to the TRA referral was made in November 2021 concerning Pupil A. The hearing documents underscored the gravity of the situation, highlighting the emotional distress experienced by the affected students and the breach of trust inherent in Coltella's actions.
