Mark Billingham Wins Prestigious Diamond Dagger Award

Esteemed crime novelist Mark Billingham has been honoured with the prestigious Crime Writers' Association Diamond Dagger award, celebrating his remarkable and sustained excellence within the genre. The 64-year-old author, renowned for his compelling Tom Thorne detective series, received the accolade with characteristic humour and profound gratitude.

A Career of Sustained Excellence Recognised

The Diamond Dagger is awarded by the Crime Writers' Association to recognise an author's significant contribution to crime writing over their career. Billingham's body of work, spanning over two decades, was specifically praised for its consistent quality and impact. Upon learning of the honour, Billingham quipped, "Presuming this is not an administrative error, I could not be more thrilled or honoured." He elaborated, "To be added to a list that features most of my literary heroes is fantastic. That so many are also friends is the icing on the cake and, for me, a mark of how very special the crime-writing community is."

The Tom Thorne Legacy and Beyond

Mark Billingham is best known for his 19-novel Tom Thorne series, which began with his acclaimed 2001 debut, Sleepyhead. The popular series was adapted for television by Sky One in 2010, with David Morrissey starring as the titular detective. His 25th book, What The Night Brings, the latest Thorne instalment, was published in June 2025.

Beyond Thorne, Billingham has demonstrated impressive versatility. He launched a new series in 2023 featuring DS Declan Miller, starting with The Last Dance, followed by The Wrong Hands. The third instalment, The Shadow Step, is due for release this year. His stand-alone works, including In The Dark, Die Of Shame, and Rabbit Hole, have also garnered critical praise, with In The Dark adapted for BBC One in 2017.

Praise from the Crime Writing Community

Nadine Matheson, chairwoman of the CWA, offered glowing praise for Billingham's influence. "Across a remarkable body of work, Mark has consistently set the bar for contemporary crime fiction," she stated. "While also being generous with his time and support to emerging writers. His influence on the genre extends far beyond his own novels, shaping the crime-writing community as a whole. For his outstanding contribution to crime fiction, his lasting impact on readers and writers alike, and his commitment to the genre, Mark Billingham is a thoroughly deserving recipient of the Diamond Dagger."

A Multifaceted Creative Journey

Billingham's path to literary acclaim was unconventional. Before becoming a full-time author, the Birmingham-born creative worked as an actor and stand-up comedian. He is fondly remembered for playing Gary in the beloved children's TV show Maid Marian And Her Merry Men.

His artistic pursuits extend to music as well. Billingham is a member of the rock band the Fun Lovin' Crime Writers, performing alongside fellow bestselling authors Val McDermid, Luca Veste, Doug Johnstone, Stuart Neville, and Chris Brookmyre. The group has performed at major events, including Glastonbury Festival in both 2019 and 2024.

Joining an Illustrious List of Recipients

The Diamond Dagger award places Billingham among the most revered names in crime fiction. Past recipients include literary giants such as Lynda La Plante, Ruth Rendell, P.D. James, Colin Dexter, Reginald Hill, and John le Carré. This award follows Billingham's previous CWA accolade, the Dagger In The Library, which he won in 2022 based on votes from librarians across the UK.

The Diamond Dagger will be formally presented to Mark Billingham at a special ceremony scheduled for July 2nd, 2026, marking a crowning achievement in a distinguished career that continues to captivate readers and inspire fellow writers within the vibrant crime fiction community.
