Alfie Boe Opens Up About Lingering Pain Following Divorce
Renowned opera singer Alfie Boe has candidly discussed the enduring emotional scars from his divorce, revealing he faces a daily internal struggle to forgive himself. The 52-year-old artist, who separated from his former wife Sarah in 2020 after 16 years of marriage, shared these intimate details ahead of the launch of his new album.
The Aftermath of Separation and Rehabilitation
Boe disclosed that the split led him to spend five weeks in rehabilitation following an overdose, highlighting the profound impact the divorce had on his mental health. In an interview with The Independent, he expressed, 'It's a battle every day learning how to forgive myself, to look at the way you were in the past, and try to become a better person.' He further admitted to difficulties in being transparent about the separation, stating, 'People don't understand why the children moved away from me. It's just a shame when you can't tell the truth, and you take the higher ground.'
Family Dynamics and Pandemic Pressures
The couple, who married in 2004, share two children: Grace, 17, and Alfie, 13. After living in the United States as a family, they relocated to the Cotswolds in 2018. However, the Covid-19 lockdown in 2020 exacerbated existing tensions, ultimately leading to their decision to separate. At the time, Boe issued a statement confirming the split, saying, 'I have nothing but love and respect for Sarah who's been an incredible partner and an amazing mother to our two beautiful children and everything is very amicable.'
Reflecting on the experience, Boe emphasized the importance of personal growth, explaining, 'If you don't think about your mistakes, you don't grow from them. That's been my philosophy over the years, to try and recover, because anybody who's gone through a separation and a divorce will tell you that it's a long road.'
Concerns for Children and New Romantic Ventures
Beyond his marital issues, Boe voiced anxieties about his children residing in the United States amidst growing social unrest. He remarked, 'It's pretty tough to feel that, every day, your kids are on the other side of the world to you. I follow a lot of US news programmes, and it scares me what's going on over there.'
In his personal life, Boe has moved on to a new relationship with Elizabeth Worth, 29, confirmed last year when he shared a photo of them at London's Savoy Hotel. This romance follows a brief, discreet fling with Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham in 2023. According to reports, the pair, who had known each other for years, began dating in 2022 when both were single, enjoying low-key meals at venues like Scott's in Richmond.
Sources indicate that Waddingham, 51, even managed to sneak Boe backstage during Eurovision to maintain privacy, as she preferred to keep the focus on her career. An insider revealed, 'With Hannah's career massively in the ascendancy, she was keen to let her work, not personal life, do the talking so they deliberately kept things quiet.' Although the relationship has since ended, they remain on friendly terms.
