Amy Madigan's Candid Reflections on John Candy's Legacy
Amy Madigan, the acclaimed actress who starred alongside John Candy in the 1989 comedy classic Uncle Buck, has offered rare and heartfelt insights into the late comedian's true character. Speaking in an interview with People magazine published this Wednesday, Madigan shared personal memories just before the 32nd anniversary of Candy's tragic passing on March 4, 1994.
The Kindness Behind the Comedy
Madigan, now 75 and recently Oscar-nominated for her role in the film Weapons, portrayed Candy's on-screen girlfriend in Uncle Buck. She described him as 'the kindest, most generous person' with a 'great big heart' who was generous to countless people. According to Madigan, Candy was a 'real family guy' who treated everyone with fairness and respect, making him 'such a cool person' both on and off set.
Challenges of Staying in Character
The actress revealed one of the most memorable aspects of working with Candy was his ability to make her break character during filming. 'I'm supposed to be angry with him as his girlfriend and he would be off camera and it was really hard to keep a straight face,' Madigan recalled. She explained that during close-up shots, Candy would throw hilarious ad-libs at her from off-camera, testing her professional composure.
A Collaborative and Fun Working Relationship
Madigan emphasized that she and Candy 'just kind of hit it off' despite not having met before Uncle Buck. She described him as 'the king of ad libs' and noted his effective creative shorthand with director John Hughes, with whom he had previously collaborated. The actress cherished their time working together, stating she 'had a lot of fun' and got to know Candy very well through shared dinners and conversations about family.
Candy's Professional Generosity
Beyond his comedic talent, Madigan highlighted Candy's supportive nature toward fellow actors. 'He would really work with you to figure out what you needed and wanted as an actor - which is what you hope that actors do, but oftentimes they don't,' she remarked. This collaborative spirit made the filming experience particularly rewarding for Madigan, who considered it 'a pretty great experience' overall.
Legacy and Recent Recognition
John Candy's career spanned iconic projects including Second City Television, National Lampoon's Vacation, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, and Home Alone. His life was recently explored in the 2025 documentary John Candy: I Like Me, directed by Colin Hanks and produced with Ryan Reynolds. Meanwhile, Madigan continues to receive acclaim, winning a Critics Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress in January and earning her second Oscar nomination forty years after her first for Twice In A Lifetime.
As the entertainment world remembers Candy three decades after his passing at age 43, Madigan's reflections offer a touching portrait of a comedian whose kindness matched his legendary humor.
