Brady Bunch Star Mike Lookinland Reveals Post-Fame 'Off the Rails' Phase

Former child star Mike Lookinland has candidly discussed the turbulent period he experienced following his time on the beloved sitcom The Brady Bunch. The actor, now 65, portrayed the youngest brother Bobby for all five seasons of the iconic ABC series, which aired from 1969 to 1974.

A Childhood Lived in Adulthood

During a recent episode of the Real Brady Bros podcast, hosted by his former co-stars Christopher Knight and Barry Williams, Lookinland revealed that he essentially lived his childhood during his twenties. He explained that the structured environment of being a child actor prevented him from experiencing typical youthful freedoms while the show was filming.

"I lived my childhood in my 20s, because I couldn't when I was a child," Lookinland confessed. "And in my 20s, I had a car and money and freedom. I was fully off the rails."

Grateful for the Pre-Smartphone Era

The actor expressed relief that his rebellious phase occurred before the era of ubiquitous smartphone cameras. "I'm just thankful that not every man, woman, and child had a high-def camera in their pocket when I was 25, like they do now, because it would have ruined my life," he remarked during the podcast interview.

Post-Brady Career and Personal Struggles

After The Brady Bunch concluded, Lookinland continued acting in various projects including:

  • Brady Bunch spinoff movies and television specials
  • An episode of Little House on the Prairie in 1977
  • The 1974 blockbuster film The Towering Inferno

He later moved to Salt Lake City to attend the University of Utah, though he did not complete his degree. In 1997, Lookinland faced legal trouble when he was arrested for driving under the influence in Salt Lake City.

The Turning Point Toward Sobriety

On the podcast, Lookinland revealed that this incident served as a crucial wake-up call that prompted him to seek treatment. He has maintained sobriety ever since and continues to reside in Salt Lake City with his wife, whom he married in 1987.

Contrasting Paths with Co-Stars

Christopher Knight, who played middle brother Peter Brady, shared a different perspective during the same podcast episode. Knight explained that he consciously avoided trouble during his transition to adulthood because he didn't want to disappoint their television parents, portrayed by Robert Reed and the late Florence Henderson.

"We didn't wanna disappoint Florence and Bob," Knight, 68, stated. "I mean, that was the beginning of it. It's like there's certain people that you just don't wanna disappoint. I think that was stronger with me with those two than it was my own parents."

The Podcast's Nostalgic Journey

The Real Brady Bros podcast features Knight and Williams rewatching episodes of the original series while sharing behind-the-scenes memories. Lookinland previously appeared on the podcast last year alongside former co-star Susan Olsen, who played youngest daughter Cindy, to address a mysterious plotline about the show's fictional blended family.

The groundbreaking sitcom, which centered on a blended family dynamic, also featured performances from Ann B. Davis, Maureen McCormick, and Eve Plumb alongside the core cast of child actors who became television icons.
