Danny Dyer Reveals Late-Night Eating Disorder Replacing Past Addictions
British actor Danny Dyer has opened up about a personal battle with an eating disorder that he says has replaced his previous struggles with addiction. The 48-year-old star, known for roles in EastEnders and the Disney+ series Rivals, spoke candidly on his podcast Live and Let Dyers about his late-night binge eating habits.
Late-Night Comfort Eating Habits
Dyer revealed that he often "eats at stupid hours" as a form of comfort, despite not feeling hungry. He described bringing food to bed, including a recent incident where he consumed four frankfurters with tomato sauce late at night. "I've got an eating disorder – just eating at stupid hours because it comforts me," Dyer explained, adding that he recognizes the need to reduce his portions but struggles to control the behavior.
Parallels to Past Addiction Struggles
The BAFTA TV Award winner drew direct comparisons between his current eating disorder and his history of alcohol and drug addiction. "It never leaves you," he stated, referencing his past rehabilitation experience. Dyer noted that while he has managed to stop drinking and using drugs, he now faces "different kinds of addictive patterns" with food that require addressing.
He elaborated on this connection, saying: "Eating and drinking and drugs – you know, there's so many different kinds of addictive patterns that need to be addressed. I could stop. I'm not hungry, I suppose." Dyer contrasted his behavior with healthier habits, joking that while some people take water to bed, he brings "two different styles of creme eggs."
Previous Rehabilitation and Personal Life
Dyer previously disclosed that he checked into rehab after what he called a "moment of clarity" when he struggled to put on a pair of jeans. He has also spoken about how his wife, Joanne Mas, manages their finances completely, a decision stemming from his past behavior when he would "go out and get off my head, take drugs, and I wouldn't come home for three days."
The actor acknowledged that his wife had "every right to throw me out" during those difficult periods, highlighting the impact his addictions had on their relationship.

Dyer currently appears in the series The Dyers' Caravan Park alongside his daughter Dani and will return for the second season of Disney+'s Rivals.
