Davina McCall Rejects Celebrity Rivalry, Praises Fearne Cotton's Support
Davina McCall on Celebrity Feuds and Friendship with Fearne Cotton

Television presenter Davina McCall has opened up about her strong friendship with fellow broadcaster Fearne Cotton, revealing how they supported each other through serious health crises including brain surgery and tumour removals. In an era where celebrities often air grievances publicly, McCall offers blunt advice for those in the spotlight.

No Room for Rivalry in the Public Eye

Speaking with her husband, Michael Douglas, on their podcast Making The Cut, Davina praised Fearne Cotton, whose Happy Place podcast shares some thematic overlap with McCall's own online talk show, Begin Again. She firmly dismissed any suggestion of competition between them.

"I think what's interesting is — because Fearne is a different person — she often asks different questions than I would. I would like to listen to one of her pods for research," McCall remarked during the conversation.

She drew a parallel comparison with fitness influencer Joe Wicks, who operates in a similar health and wellness space. "I had Joe Wicks on Begin Again, and we basically fill the same kind of space with our love for exercise. But we have never, ever slagged each other off or been rude about each other," she noted emphatically.

Celebrity Feuds Are "A Waste of Life"

With over three decades of experience in the public eye, McCall described showbusiness conflicts as pointless and destructive. "There's space for everybody. I actually think the world is a horrible place online and all around. If you are in the same business as someone else — entertainment, broadcasting, whatever — don't publicly slag them off," she advised.

She recommends direct communication instead of public disputes: "If you've got real beef with someone, contact them. Well, no, contact them and tell them. Like it's very easy nowadays." Rather than focusing on celebrities she dislikes, McCall prefers to celebrate those she admires, calling Fearne Cotton "quite brilliant."

A Friendship Forged Through Challenge and Crisis

Recalling the origins of their bond, McCall explained that Sport Relief brought them together. "We did a huge challenge from John O'Groats to Land's End and we got on brilliantly then. And we've been friends since then, but kind of lightly... casual friends messaging every now and again," she shared.

The friendship deepened significantly when both women faced serious health issues. "I'd check in with her, she'd check in with me," McCall continued. "But then when we both got sick, she really, really stepped up. She was amazing. And I like to hope that I reciprocated in some way. And I absolutely love that woman."

Fearne Cotton, now 43, underwent surgery in late 2024 to remove two tumours from her jawline and salivary gland after noticing the growth. Despite the potentially disfiguring procedure, she has since confirmed her recovery is progressing well.

Shared Health Battles Create Deeper Connection

Davina McCall's own health struggles are well-documented. In November 2024, she underwent surgery to remove a rare colloid cyst that risked pressing on her brain. Twelve months later, having recovered from that procedure, she discovered a small lump in one of her breasts that was also successfully removed.

On her Begin Again podcast, the former Big Brother presenter characterized herself as possessing an "aggravatingly and annoyingly positive" outlook that has helped her navigate life's numerous challenges. "I have been through so many things and sometimes I have wondered why I am still such a positive person," she commented, noting that this optimistic disposition extends to her interactions with fellow celebrities.

McCall's message emphasizes collaboration over competition, suggesting that the entertainment industry has room for multiple voices and perspectives without descending into public conflict. Her experience with Cotton demonstrates how shared challenges can transform casual acquaintances into meaningful, supportive relationships that transcend professional boundaries.
