A former star of ITV's flagship daytime programme This Morning, who contributed to the show for seven years, has offered a revealing assessment of three current fan favourites, blending praise with pointed criticism.
Jaci Stephen's Tenure and Reflections
Jaci Stephen, who held roles including soap critic and film critic during her time on the programme from the era of original presenters Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan, has penned her verdict for The i newspaper. Reflecting on her experience, she described working with Madeley and Finnigan as a privilege, stating they were "a more impressive pair of consummate professionals would be hard to find." She added, "Not only were they wonderful presenters, they were sharp journalists who also had the populist Midas touch – tapping into the heartfelt sensibilities of viewers." However, Stephen noted a lingering issue: "The problem is the show continues to try to recreate that template, which, to me, it has consistently failed to do."
Praise for Sharon Marshall and Gyles Brandreth
Stephen reserved high praise for two familiar faces currently gracing the This Morning studio. Firstly, she discussed Sharon Marshall, 54, who has been the show's Soaps Expert since 2003, succeeding Stephen in that role. "Sharon Marshall, my successor as Soap Queen, is terrific," Stephen wrote. "She is also a very fine writer on EastEnders. My initial concern that she would in some way be compromised in this dual role were unfounded."
Similarly, broadcaster and former MP Gyles Brandreth received glowing accolades. Stephen expressed, "Gyles Brandreth is a joy and if I had my way he’d be on TV 24/7. His intelligence, quick wit, charm and all-round brilliance never fail to impress."
Critical Assessment of Alison Hammond
In contrast, Stephen offered a more critical perspective on Alison Hammond, who has been a Friday co-presenter since 2021 after joining the show as a reporter and presenter in 2002. Stephen wrote, "I like Alison Hammond, but she is no interviewer, and the idea that she is needs to be knocked on the head with a very large mallet." This comment highlights a perceived gap in Hammond's skillset, despite her popularity and long-standing association with the programme.
Alison Hammond's Potential New Venture
Elsewhere, it has emerged that Alison Hammond is reportedly in talks with BBC bosses to appear on the next series of The Celebrity Traitors. According to sources cited by The Sun, she is believed to be "keen" to participate, with BBC executives convinced she could be "comedy gold," akin to Alan Carr's performance. A source revealed, "Alison is naturally very funny and they think she could end up being hugely successful. The pot of talent wanting to take part is overflowing, so they have a lot to weigh up."
Contracts are not expected to be signed until later in the year, but interest remains high. Other A-listers rumoured to be on the potential list include Danny Dyer and Gavin & Stacey star Ruth Jones. A representative for the BBC declined to comment on speculation, stating, "We're not commenting on speculation but details about series two of The Celebrity Traitors will be announced in due course."
