King Charles and Queen Camilla were greeted on Tuesday morning with a state ceremony by President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump on the second day of the historic visit to the United States.
Historic Gift Exchange
King Charles presented Donald Trump with a framed replica of the 1879 design plans for the Resolute Desk. The original drawings are held by the National Maritime Museum in London. The Resolute Desk, a permanent fixture in the White House, was crafted from the timbers of the British exploration ship HMS Resolute and gifted to President Rutherford B. Hayes by Queen Victoria in 1880.
Donald Trump reciprocated by gifting King Charles a custom replica of a 1785 letter from John Adams to John Jay. The letter details Adams' historic meeting with King George III, where both expressed a desire for renewed friendship between their nations.
Gifts Between the Queens
Separately, Queen Camilla gave Melania Trump a brooch by British designer Fiona Rae. In return, Melania Trump presented Camilla with Tiffany's English King Sterling Silver Teaspoons and White House Honey.
The exchange of gifts highlights the enduring diplomatic ties between the United States and the United Kingdom, with each item carrying historical significance. The state visit continues with further engagements planned throughout the week.
