Chris Hemsworth Declares Australian Move His 'Greatest Decision'

Marvel superstar Chris Hemsworth has revealed that abandoning Hollywood for his native Australia stands as the "greatest decision" he ever made. The 42-year-old actor, alongside his wife Elsa Pataky and their three children, departed Los Angeles, California, in 2015 to establish a new life on a substantial farm in Byron Bay.

Escaping the Hollywood Pressure Cooker

During a recent appearance on the SmartLess podcast, hosted by Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett, Hemsworth shed light on the motivations behind this significant life change. He pinpointed the relentless paparazzi and the intense pressures inherent to the Hollywood environment as primary catalysts for the relocation.

"It was right around the time my boys were born, and it was just, we kind of were set up in LA and not enjoying it, you know?" Hemsworth explained. "Like nothing was shooting there. We were filming kind of everywhere else. And then… you'd come home and paparazzi and all the sort of the trappings of living in that space."

The actor, who married Pataky in 2010, is a father to daughter India Rose, 13, and 11-year-old twin sons Sasha and Tristan. He emphasized that their sprawling Australian property now provides a sanctuary far removed from the chaos of celebrity life in California.

A Multi-Million Dollar Australian Sanctuary

The family's Byron Bay estate, originally purchased for $7 million in 2014, has undergone extensive transformation. Reports from 2022 indicated the property had been developed into a luxurious compound valued between $30 million and $60 million.

The renovated six-bedroom home now features impressive amenities including a steam room, a private gym, a dedicated media room, and a games room. Outdoor living is elevated with play areas for the children and a stunning 50-meter rooftop infinity pool that offers panoramic ocean views.

Further expanding their Australian holdings, the couple acquired a 35-hectare Broken Head horse ranch and retreat in 2019 for $4.25 million, now estimated to be worth around $10 million. This property boasts state-of-the-art equestrian facilities with dressage and show jumping arenas, alongside a man-made swimming lake complete with a cabana, islands, and even a water slide.

Returning to His Roots

Born in 1983, Hemsworth grew up in the bushland near Melbourne with his brothers, fellow actors Liam and Luke Hemsworth. He credits this childhood environment of outdoor adventures and imaginative play with sparking his initial interest in acting.

"It was just all bush land and rainforest sort of set up around us," he recalled of his youth. "And so, we would just [have]… adventures outdoors and playing different characters."

Now, over a decade into their Australian life, Hemsworth describes the profound sense of peace and escape their home provides. "You know, when you come back from work, you wanna go on a holiday?" he mused. "Like coming home for me is – it feels like a holiday."

The family's move to the laid-back surf town south of the Gold Coast has clearly redefined their daily existence, trading the glare of Hollywood spotlights for the spacious, adventure-filled lifestyle of their Australian farm.
