Howie Mandel Issues Public Apology to Kelly Ripa Following Awkward On-Air Exchange
Comedian and television personality Howie Mandel has publicly apologised to talk show host Kelly Ripa after a tense on-air exchange during a recent episode of Live with Kelly and Mark went viral across social media platforms. The incident, which occurred on March 23, involved Mandel shutting down Ripa's attempt to compliment his appearance following his 70th birthday celebration.
The Controversial Compliment That Sparked the Disagreement
During the broadcast, Ripa's co-host and husband Mark Consuelos noted that Mandel had recently celebrated turning 70 years old, with Ripa adding that this milestone "doesn't make any sense" to her given his youthful appearance. When Mandel questioned what she meant, Consuelos clarified by stating "You look great!" This prompted an immediate and sharp reaction from the veteran comedian.
"I look great? That doesn't mean anything to me! No, no, no, no. I don't like that, because that's a caveat," Mandel responded abruptly, cutting off the conversation. Ripa attempted to explain that they were not implying he looked great specifically for his age, but rather that he simply looked great regardless of his years. Mandel pushed back, insisting that the age qualifier was implied even if not explicitly stated.
Mandel's Instagram Apology and Explanation
On Sunday, following 48 hours of deliberation, Mandel posted a video apology on his Instagram account addressing the incident. In the nearly three-minute video, the comedian explained that while he believed his comments were intended as humorous banter, he felt compelled to apologise due to Ripa's longstanding support throughout his career.
"I have been debating for 48 hours whether I should make this post or not. And I don't know if I'm doing the right thing, philosophically," Mandel began in his video statement. "I don't believe that somebody... who's a comedian needs to apologize for a joke. It is a joke. It is meant as a joke, and it's not meant to offend... In all my years, 50 years in the business, I haven't ever publicly kind of apologized for [a joke]. It's hard for me."
The comedian went on to acknowledge Ripa's professional support over the years, noting that he has not only been a guest on her show but has also co-hosted with her on multiple occasions. "When I go out there, I just try to be entertaining and funny, and sometimes, as a comedian, things don't land the way you mean them to land," he admitted.
A Reluctant Admission and Self-Reflection
In a surprising turn, Mandel concluded his apology with an admission that contradicted his initial reaction during the broadcast. "And I don't know how to say this, but not only do I want to say I'm sorry to Kelly, but — and this is the hardest part — you're right. You're absolutely right. And I'm sorry I didn't see it that way," he stated.
The comedian then embraced the very compliment he had rejected days earlier, smiling as he declared: "But after a lot of thought and self-reflection, I do look great for my age! I really do... I look fantastic, and I just have to embrace the fact that I look this good."
Despite the viral nature of the exchange and subsequent apology, representatives for Kelly Ripa did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding Mandel's public apology. The remainder of the March 23 interview reportedly continued without further tension between the three personalities following the initial exchange about Mandel's appearance and age.
