Jennifer Garner's Northern Lights Trip with Mother Pat

Actress Jennifer Garner rang in 2026 with a breathtaking and deeply personal adventure, fulfilling a heartfelt wish for her 86-year-old mother, Pat. The star organised an epic journey to one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, travelling to the remote reaches of Canada to witness the spectacular Northern Lights.

A Mother's Adventurous Wish Fulfilled

In a moving video montage shared with her 17.2 million Instagram followers, Garner explained the trip's poignant origin. "My mom, Pat, she's an adventurer. This year she told me that she needed to see the Northern Lights. Needed to see them," the 53-year-old Alias alum emphasised. Heeding her mother's call, the pair embarked on a quest to Yellowknife in Canada's Northwest Territories, touching down on New Year's Day as the sun set at a remarkably early 3:45pm.

The mother-daughter duo, captured in photos bundled in heavy winter coats with fur-trimmed hoods, were in search of the elusive Aurora Borealis. Guides initially warned them that the solar-powered light display might not be visible, adding an element of suspense to their pilgrimage. However, luck was firmly on their side.

A Sky Alive with Dancing Colour

Garner described a magical scene under a bright, full moon that cast shadows "like the sun was out." Then, the main event arrived. "Just like mom ordered, right overhead, bright in the sky, bright to the naked eye, [there were] greens and yellows and purples from one side of the sky to the other, dancing overhead," she recounted with palpable awe. The emotional video concluded with Garner gasping "Wow" repeatedly, utterly captivated by the natural spectacle.

In her Instagram caption, the mother-of-three reflected on the profound experience, writing: "If experiencing awe is good for you, 2026 started off with [heart emoji]. Thank you, Mom." She extended her gratitude to their guides in Yellowknife, noting they cared for Pat "like she was your own."

A Bond Forged Through Adventure and Resilience

This trip underscores the special bond between Garner and her mother, which has been a source of public admiration. In a June 2024 appearance on the Today show, they spoke candidly about the passing of Garner's father, William, after 59 years of marriage. Pat shared her epiphany about coping with widowhood, stating, "You will be alright." Garner, in turn, praised her mother's character, saying, "She is just kind of gifted at giving to people and seeing what people need and just quietly taking care of them."

Their New Year's expedition to see the Aurora Borealis was more than a holiday; it was a testament to family, resilience, and the enduring power of shared wonder. By documenting this personal journey, Jennifer Garner offered a relatable and inspiring glimpse into the importance of making memories with loved ones, regardless of age.
