Jessica Sweetnam Reveals Overnight Studio Stays Led to Major Record Deal
Jessica Sweetnam's Overnight Studio Stays Led to Record Deal

Jessica Sweetnam's Fearless Journey from Office Sofas to Stardom

Singer-songwriter Jessica Sweetnam has candidly shared the formidable challenges she faced early in her career, revealing how sheer determination and unconventional tactics propelled her to secure a major record deal. The Sutton Coldfield-born artist detailed her struggles upon arriving in Nashville after a brief period in Los Angeles, already holding a publishing agreement with BMG but yearning for a full recording contract.

Survival Mode in Music City

With extortionate hotel prices in Nashville leaving her virtually homeless, Sweetnam was granted a keycard for BMG's offices, intended for daytime use between 9am and 5pm. However, she ingeniously exploited the 24-hour access, remaining in the studios overnight after staff departed at 6pm. "I was fearless, I'm still fearless now, but at that time, my back was up against the wall, I was struggling," Sweetnam confessed to the Mirror, describing herself as being in "fight mode" throughout this precarious period.

For ten consecutive nights, she covertly slept on office sofas, using the solitary hours to meticulously craft her music. "I was running on low energy," she admitted, but during these clandestine sessions, she was "producing gold". Her covert operation was eventually discovered, but rather than retreating, Sweetnam seized the opportunity to request a meeting with the label's head.

The Pivotal Meeting That Changed Everything

In a bold move, Sweetnam openly explained her situation, revealing she had "slept on every sofa" in the office, and proceeded to play four original songs from her developing record. This audacious presentation directly resulted in the label signing her. "It was just incredible, from that to getting a major record deal, it was an interesting way in," she reflected, acknowledging the unorthodox path to her breakthrough.

Rise Up: A Song Born from Struggle

Sweetnam is now promoting her latest single, Rise Up, accompanied by a cinematic music video featuring Peaky Blinders actor Emmett J. Scanlan. The collaboration originated after Scanlan witnessed her performance at the Irish Post Awards and expressed interest in featuring in a video. "He loved the song; it's very much his genre and the style he likes," Sweetnam noted.

The two-day shoot in Hastings yielded what she describes as a "beautiful piece," with the final edit moving her to tears. She elaborated on the song's essence: "It's a song about struggle and about trouble, and it's got quite a darkness to it really... But what I love about the video is there's this hope, and there's kind of light at the end of it." Scanlan praised the collaboration, stating, "Jessica was so insanely collaborative and trusting throughout the whole process."

Vulnerability and Artistic Truth

Releasing such personal material is inherently daunting for Sweetnam. "It feels very vulnerable, because I write the truth, I don't write fiction," she explained. "All of my art is very, very real and raw and sometimes, with that, it can be quite, quite frightening because you are literally putting your heart and soul out into the world." Rise Up specifically emanates from "a place of struggle, trouble and perseverance," themes she believes are universally relatable.

Despite the challenges, she senses a "positive shift" with this release, calling it the "perfect song" for the current moment. She views her music as a lifelong commitment: "I'm married to my music... My whole life is around this, it's a marriage." When recently asked if the arduous journey was worthwhile, her response was unequivocal: "Yes, 100%."

Looking Ahead: Tours and New Music

Sweetnam's perseverance is now yielding tangible rewards. She is preparing to embark on a two-month national tour, opening concerts for her friend, acclaimed artist Alfie Boe, including a prestigious date at the Royal Albert Hall. "He's a dear friend of mine, he's just brilliant," she said of Boe. In preparation, she has undertaken rigorous vocal training with coach Annabell Williams and consultations with costume designers.

Her schedule remains packed, with a headline show at St Pancras Old Church on June 18th, more singles slated for release throughout the year, and an additional tour planned for the autumn. Reflecting on her tumultuous path and current trajectory, Sweetnam affirmed a message of resilience: "As Rise Up says, there are those dark times, but there's always light at the end of the tunnel... If you can hold onto hope... you kind of have a mindset that 'This will all be fine'."
