Kate Garraway's daughter 'horrified' by mum's 'preposterous' Traitors hats
Kate Garraway's daughter horrified by Traitors appearance

Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway has confessed that her teenage daughter was left 'absolutely horrified' by her mother's participation in the hit BBC series The Celebrity Traitors. The revelation came during a candid discussion about the family's reaction to her televised deception.

University Viewing Party Backfire

Speaking on the Parenting Hell podcast with comedians Rob Beckett and Josh Widdicombe, Kate explained the tricky timing of the show's broadcast. The first episode aired just three weeks into her 19-year-old daughter Darcey's first term at university, following Freshers' Week.

Darcey had organised a viewing party in her university common room, hoping to use her mum's appearance on the popular show as a way to bond with new friends. However, the plan spectacularly backfired. Kate recounted receiving a frantic phone call from her daughter immediately after the episode ended.

'Preposterous' Hats and a Popular YouTuber

'She phoned me... absolutely horrified,' Kate shared. Darcey's primary complaint centred on her mother's choice of headwear, exclaiming: 'What's the deal with the hats? I've been telling you since primary school, they are preposterous.'

To compound the social pressure, Darcey found herself in a loyalty bind during the first roundtable banishment. Her mother was up against the hugely popular YouTuber and influencer Niko Omilana, who was a firm favourite amongst Darcey's new peer group.

'She said, "he is the single most popular person! They're all obsessed with Niko",' Kate recalled. 'I don't know what to wish for, because I don't really want you to be out, but also, if he's out, none of my friends are ever going to speak to me again.'

The Aftermath and a Change in Perspective

The awkwardness continued beyond the first episode. Kate revealed that for the entire following week, Darcey's fellow students would greet her with a 'slightly head-cock thing' and a sympathetic mention of her mother's televised exploits. Kate admitted the first week was 'quite torturous' for her daughter, though she later 'owned it'.

Despite the family's initial embarrassment, Kate, who reached the semi-finals of the debut celebrity series earlier this year, has previously praised the show for its personal impact. Following the death of her husband Derek Draper in January 2024, she told her Traitors co-stars the experience helped shift her perspective after years of grief.

'I think I’ve had quite a few years recently of being quite sad and have to be quite controlled and inward looking - and you’ve all made me feel a bit like I’m looking out,' she said in a final farewell on the programme.
