Lisa George Opens Up on £8k Eye Surgery and Weight Loss

Former Coronation Street Star Lisa George Unveils Dramatic Transformation

Actress Lisa George has candidly shared details of her remarkable physical transformation, revealing both a significant weight loss journey and an £8,000 eye surgery procedure. The 55-year-old former Coronation Street star, who played Beth Tinker for 13 years, showcased her slimmer frame and rejuvenated appearance in a new photoshoot that marks a stark departure from her Weatherfield character.

The £8,000 Eye Surgery That Restored Confidence

Lisa revealed that sagging skin around her eyes had left her feeling profoundly unhappy, prompting her to undergo an upper blepharoplasty and brow lift. The £8,000 procedure successfully removed the excess skin that had been obscuring her eyes, giving her a more open and youthful look.

'Every time I squinted or smiled, my top lid would cover my whole eye,' Lisa explained. 'I'd look like I was frowning, and it'd make me feel so down.' She added that during her time on Coronation Street, the heavy eyeshadow required for her character would collect in her creases, making close-up shots particularly daunting.

The actress now plans to pursue further cosmetic work, specifically a lower face lift to address what she describes as her 'hanging chin,' stating she refuses to 'grow old gracefully with great big bin bags.'

A Three-Stone Weight Loss Journey

Lisa's physical transformation extends beyond cosmetic surgery to include an impressive three-stone weight loss. This achievement comes after she faced significant health challenges, including stomach issues and a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.

The actress recalled facing cruel trolling about her size, with one particularly hurtful comment from a decorator who told her 'you look massive on telly.' Lisa admitted feeling 'so ashamed' after gaining weight during menopause.

'As soon as I got to my fifties and menopause hit, I just piled it on,' she confessed. Her weight loss began after consulting an endocrinologist who placed her on a restrictive low-FODMAP diet designed to identify food intolerances.

'The weight just fell off,' Lisa said. 'I was so mad with myself that I hadn't started getting my weight under control earlier.'

Battling a Genetic Eye Condition

Beyond her cosmetic concerns, Lisa has been dealing with a serious genetic eye condition that threatens her vision. She has been diagnosed with NAION (non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy), which causes sudden vision loss in one eye.

The actress suffered her first eye incident in 2016 when a piece of rope struck her right eye while gardening. Days later, she completely lost sight in that eye and subsequently scraped her car while driving. Medical examinations revealed she had permanently lost part of the vision at the bottom of her right eye.

Over six years, Lisa consulted numerous eye specialists through both private and NHS services, undergoing scans and dye tests in an attempt to understand what had caused the hemorrhage in her eye. Doctors remained divided on whether the trauma from the rope or another underlying condition was responsible.

'Luckily my left eye was really good with 20/20 vision,' Lisa noted, adding that Coronation Street production accommodated her by printing scripts in larger font. However, she has expressed fears that her visual impairment could potentially end her acting career.

'I always think there are people far worse off than you, and I'm just grateful I can still see,' she said in a 2024 interview. 'But we don't know what could happen in the future.'

Lisa George's story represents a multifaceted journey through health challenges, cosmetic procedures, and personal transformation, highlighting both the pressures of public life and the resilience required to navigate significant physical changes.
