Meghan Markle's Australian Visit Fuels Soho House Promotion Speculation
With the Duchess of Sussex's upcoming trip to Australia, intense speculation is circulating regarding the true purpose behind her journey. Meghan Markle is scheduled to be the star attraction at the inaugural Her Best Life Retreat, an event organised by the company Besties, which was founded by former radio personality Jackie 'O' Henderson and her manager, Gemma O'Neill. However, numerous observers and online commentators are suggesting that this wellness-focused gathering might be a secondary concern, with the primary objective being to generate business for the exclusive members' club, Soho House.
The Soho House Connection and Advisory Committee Links
Soho House, an upscale, private social club originally established in London in 1995, caters to creative professionals by offering luxurious spaces for work, dining, and networking. Its global expansion has resulted in 48 locations worldwide, with its first Australian outpost slated to open in Sydney in 2026. While an official opening date for the five-level Darlinghurst venue remains unconfirmed, the timing of Markle's visit has raised eyebrows. Notably, Gemma O'Neill, co-founder of Besties, is also a member of the Soho House Sydney advisory committee.
This dual role has sparked theories online. One Reddit user pointedly remarked, "O'Neill isn't just some random podcast host fangirling over Harry's SoHo rental. She's on the Soho House Sydney advisory committee, which means this Girls Weekend retreat is Soho House business disguised as women's empowerment." Another commenter added that while the Sydney club might not be operational during Markle's stay, the visit presents an ideal opportunity for early promotion and member recruitment, suggesting the retreat could serve as a "recruitment tool" for Soho House.
Markle's Long-Standing Ties to Soho House and Key Figures
The Duchess's association with Soho House is well-documented and dates back years. She famously had her first date with Prince Harry at Soho House's London Townhouse in 2016. Furthermore, she maintains a close friendship with Soho House senior executive Markus Anderson, who reportedly facilitated that initial romantic meeting. Anderson has also played a role in organising Markle's Australian itinerary. Gemma O'Neill revealed that Anderson, while at Meghan's home, messaged her with the idea for the retreat, describing him as a "top-notch human" whose character she trusts implicitly.
These connections have led to further conjecture. A Daily Mail reader commented, "Markle has always worked for Soho House and still does. She is actually really coming to Australia to attend the opening of a new Soho House facility with Markus Anderson." The potential financial incentives are significant, with Soho House Sydney memberships costing approximately $2,285 annually for individuals under 27 and $4,750 for those 27 and older. Some online speculate that Markle might even negotiate a commission for any new members recruited from the retreat attendees.
The Her Best Life Retreat: High Costs and Past Event Concerns
The Her Best Life Retreat, currently the only official engagement on Markle's Australian schedule, is promoted as a three-day wellness and empowerment experience for women. However, this empowerment comes at a steep price, with tickets ranging from $2,699 to $3,199 per person. VIP ticket holders, paying $3,199, are promised a group photo with the Duchess and premium seating at a gala dinner. The event, scheduled for April 17–19, is projected to generate nearly $1 million in ticket revenue, with organisers claiming it is already sold out.
Nevertheless, questions linger about the retreat's execution, particularly given Gemma O'Neill's track record. In 2023, Besties planned a sold-out luxury summit at Kokomo Private Island in Fiji, featuring high-profile speakers like comedian Celeste Barber and fashion designer Pip Edwards. Tickets for that event started at $9,000, but it was cancelled just weeks before its commencement, disappointing many attendees. This history raises legitimate concerns about O'Neill's capacity to deliver on ambitious, high-profile promises, adding another layer of scrutiny to Markle's upcoming Australian appearance.
