Mia McKenna-Bruce, the actress whose career is soaring with prominent roles including an Agatha Christie detective, a royal-linked murderer, and the wife of a Beatle, has now revealed a personal connection to Scotland. In a recent podcast interview, the rising star confirmed she "is Scottish," shedding light on her family background despite being born and raised in England.
Scottish Roots and Family Ties
While Ms McKenna-Bruce hails from Bromley as the eldest of three siblings, her heritage traces back to Scotland through both parents. She explained that her mother Angela's family, "The McKennas," are Scottish and reside in Glasgow, with her grandparents possessing distinct Scottish accents. Additionally, her father Bruce served in a Scottish army regiment, the Lowland Gunners, which has fostered frequent visits to Scotland for military reunions.
"It's all a bit chaotic," the actress admitted during her conversation with Scots actress Lauren Lyle on the She's A Rec podcast. "My dad was in a Scottish regiment in the army, so we go to Scotland a lot for army reunions. It's really cool. I think that's why he wears his kilt a lot. But my mum is actually Scottish."
DNA Confirmation and Cultural Pride
Further solidifying her Scottish lineage, Ms McKenna-Bruce noted that her mother underwent a DNA test, which revealed their ancestry as "pure Scottish." This heritage was celebrated at her August 2024 wedding to fellow actor Tom Leach, where her father donned a kilt and a piper from his regiment performed, adding a Scottish flair to the ceremony. The couple had welcomed their first child, Leo, a year prior.
When Ms Lyle humorously inquired if she was related to the famed Scottish king Robert The Bruce, the actress responded affirmatively, stating, "Yes, I am Scottish. Bruce is very Scottish and we have a Bruce tartan." She added, "My dad wears a kilt and stuff," emphasising the family's embrace of Scottish traditions.
Career Ascendancy and Recent Roles
Ms McKenna-Bruce's disclosure comes as her professional trajectory continues to climb. After starting her career at age 11 in EastEnders and later starring in The Story of Tracy Beaker, she gained significant recognition by winning the BAFTA Rising Star Award in 2024. Her recent projects have garnered critical acclaim, including a leading role as Lady Eileen "Bundle" Brent in Netflix's adaptation of Agatha Christie's Seven Dials Mystery, where she starred alongside Helena Bonham Carter and Martin Freeman.
Currently, she portrays murderer Jane Andrews, a former aide to Sarah Ferguson, the then Duchess of York, in the ITV drama The Lady. Looking ahead, she is set to star as Maureen Starkey, the first wife of Ringo Starr, in Sam Mendes' upcoming series of four Beatles biopics. When pressed about this role on the podcast, Ms McKenna-Bruce maintained secrecy, saying, "I can say it's great. That's as much as I can say. And it's so annoying because I want to say everything but I just can't."
On-Set Anecdotes and Personal Insights
Beyond her heritage and career, the podcast delved into lighter topics, such as the trend of actors wearing Ugg Boots on set, which Ms McKenna-Bruce described as having evolved from a comfort item to a professional marker. "They started as a comfort thing but now it's become a bit of a trademark. Like, if you're not wearing Ugg boots, you're not one of the real actors," she remarked.
She also shared humorous challenges related to her 4ft 9in height, particularly when filming romantic scenes with taller co-stars. "I find the hardest thing in the world is to be sexy. When someone tells you to be sexy in a scene, I'm like 'I don't know how to do this,'" she confessed. "Thank god for intimacy co-ordinators. I'm like: 'Do I look sexy?' I also have this thing where I don't want people to think that I think I look sexy. I want to feel sexy, but I don't want people to think I think I look sexy."
As Mia McKenna-Bruce continues to navigate her burgeoning career, her newfound openness about her Scottish roots adds a personal dimension to her public persona, connecting her to a rich cultural heritage while she takes on increasingly high-profile roles in the entertainment industry.
