Michel Roux Jr Shares Thoughts on Gordon Ramsay's Netflix Documentary
Top chef Michel Roux Jr has exclusively revealed his perspective on fellow culinary star Gordon Ramsay's new Netflix documentary, Being Gordon Ramsay. The renowned French-English chef, speaking at the launch of The Langham Afternoon Tea Cookbook, admitted he has not yet viewed the series but plans to do so soon.
"OK, I'll admit, I've not actually seen it yet!" Roux told The Mirror. "But knowing Gordon, I'm sure it's entertaining. My daughter Emily, who is also a chef, watched it and she loved it."
Friendship and Career Reflections
Michel and Gordon's friendship dates back to Ramsay's early training under the Roux family at the iconic London restaurant Le Gavroche. Roux has previously described the famously fiery Ramsay as the most "naturally gifted chef" he has ever worked alongside.
When asked if he would consider a similar documentary about his own life and career, Roux responded positively. "Possibly. I don't see why not - it showcases that hospitality is a beautiful industry to be in, but a tough one, as well," he explained.
Reflecting on his lengthy career, which began at age 16 and now spans five decades, Roux expressed no regrets. "It's a lot of hard work - there's dish-washing involved! But it's a wonderful industry to be in. I have no regrets in my career, I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat."
The Langham Afternoon Tea Cookbook Launch
The new cookbook, filled with recipes for traditional and modern afternoon tea treats, holds special significance for Roux. "There are some very traditional pastries in there, like The Battenberg, some scones - but also some takes on the traditional, like the custard cream cake," he detailed. "We've given some classics a lovely modern interpretation."
Roux has served as a consultant chef at The Langham for approximately fifteen years, describing the hotel as "really special." He highlighted its historical importance, noting that The Langham, which opened in 1865, was the first establishment to transform afternoon tea from an aristocratic drawing-room custom into an accessible luxury hotel experience.
Family Life and Simple Pleasures
Despite his glamorous career, which includes maintaining two Michelin stars at Le Gavroche before its closure in January 2024, Roux emphasized the value of simplicity at home. Living in South London with his French wife, Giselle, he cherishes cooking's ability to bring people together.
"Yes we're in a beautiful luxurious hotel right now and it's very fancy - but at home, with friends and family, you switch off the phones, the telly and rustle something up and enjoy together and have a good catch-up," Roux shared. "And the food doesn't even need to be anything complicated. I certainly don't eat fancy food at home. In fact, I think I'm having an omelette when I get home tonight!"
Proud Father and Career Advice
Cooking remains a family affair for Roux, whose daughter Emily, 34, runs the acclaimed restaurant Caractère in London's Notting Hill with her Italian husband, Diego Ferrari. The restaurant earned its first Michelin star last year, a achievement that fills Roux with paternal pride.
"I'm a very proud dad. But look, I don't butt in. She's the boss - absolutely," he stated. "I'm here to give advice if she needs it, but Emily's doing her own thing - and doing it very well indeed."
Roux attributes his longevity in the industry to passion and simple pleasures. "But it keeps me young. It's the champagne and afternoon tea - that's the secret to longevity. And of course, a passion for what I do that's just never faded - I think that helps."
The Langham Afternoon Tea Book, published by Quarto and priced at £20, is now available for purchase.
