Nicole Kidman Breaks Silence on Keith Urban Divorce, Vows 'We'll Continue to Be a Family'
Nicole Kidman has broken her silence regarding her divorce from country music star Keith Urban, making her first public comments about the separation that ended their nearly two-decade marriage. The acclaimed actress emphasised that Urban will always remain an integral part of her family despite their marital dissolution.
First Public Comments Since Divorce Filing
In a revealing new interview with Variety, the 58-year-old Oscar-winning actress addressed questions about her wellbeing following the separation. "I am, because I'm always going to be moving toward what's good," Kidman stated when asked if she was doing all right since the split. "What I'm grateful for is my family and keeping them as is and moving forward. That's that."
The Babygirl star continued with a poignant declaration about her family's future: "Everything else I don't discuss out of respect. I'm staying in a place of, 'We are a family,' and that's what we'll continue to be. My beautiful girls, my darlings, who are suddenly women."
Divorce Timeline and Legal Proceedings
Kidman officially filed for divorce in September 2025, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for ending the marriage that had lasted nearly twenty years. The filing came shortly after sources revealed to TMZ that the couple had been living separately "since the beginning of summer" 2025.
The divorce was finalised in January 2026, with Nashville Judge Stephanie J. Williams confirming in court filings that the former couple's agreements regarding asset division and child custody were sufficient. Neither Kidman nor Urban attended the court hearing in person.
Under the settlement terms:
- Kidman will serve as the primary residential parent
- Their two daughters, Sunday Rose (17) and Faith Margaret (15), will continue living in Nashville
- Neither parent will require child or spousal support
- Joint assets will be divided roughly equally between both parties
Reflections on a Challenging Year
Kidman appeared to reference the difficult period surrounding her divorce earlier in the Variety interview while discussing how 2025 unfolded for her personally. "I was quiet. I had other things going on. I was in my shell," she revealed.
The actress contrasted this with her current outlook: "Now I'm in a place of saying, '2026. Here we go.' I have Practical Magic with Sandy," she added, referring to the highly anticipated sequel of her iconic 1998 film with Sandra Bullock. "I'll be in full witch mode."
Relationship History and Previous Marriage
Kidman and Urban, both originally from Australia, first met in Los Angeles in 2005 and married in Sydney the following year. This marked Urban's first marriage, while it represented Kidman's second high-profile union.
Her previous marriage to Tom Cruise lasted from 1990 to 2001, when Kidman was just 23 years old at the time of their wedding. The couple had two adopted children together: Isabella and Connor.
Reflecting on her early marriage in a 2016 interview with Red magazine, Kidman remarked: "I was so young when I got married. I look back now and I'm like, 'What?' You look at Taylor Swift, I mean how old is she? She's 26. I had two kids by the time I was 27 and I'd been married for four years. But that's what I wanted."
Despite the end of her marriage to Urban, Kidman's comments emphasise her commitment to maintaining family unity and moving forward positively with her daughters as they transition into adulthood.
