Former Great British Bake Off judge Prue Leith has shared a deeply personal and "painful" revelation about the early stages of her romance with her second husband, John Playfair. The 85-year-old television personality opened up about the anxiety she felt when deciding to be honest about her age with Playfair, who was younger than her, fearing it could end their relationship before it truly began.
The Moment of Truth in Their Relationship
Prue Leith met John Playfair fifteen years ago, at a time when she had been a widow for nearly a decade following the death of her first husband, Rayne Kruger. She was 70 years old at the time, while Playfair was 64. In a candid interview with the Daily Mail, Leith described how she strategically wove the mention of her turning 70 into a conversation, fully expecting him to "sneak out of the church" upon hearing it.
"I figured the deeper in I got, the more painful his walking away would be. Better bite on the bullet now, I thought," Leith explained. To her relief, Playfair did not leave, and their relationship continued to flourish, leading to their marriage.
Life After Bake Off and Personal Priorities
This revelation comes shortly after Prue Leith announced her decision to step down from The Great British Bake Off after almost a decade on the show, where she had replaced the iconic Dame Mary Berry. She admitted that her departure was driven by a desire to enjoy life "while she still can," citing her age as a factor.
"I want to live life to the full because I’m 85, of course I haven’t got much time left, there’s nothing wrong with me," Leith told Vanessa Feltz. She emphasized wanting more time for travel, family, and grandchildren, calling these desires "really selfish things."
Adjusting to Love After Widowhood
Before meeting John Playfair, Prue Leith had grown accustomed to being a widow and even found aspects of single life liberating. She enjoyed the independence, from not having to account for missed trains to eating yogurt straight from the carton by the fridge. "Oh, and the bliss of sole command of the TV remote! Single status had a lot to recommend it," she quipped.
However, she has since embraced the companionship and care from her husband, noting how he shows interest in every detail of her life, from her choice of earrings to the welfare of her grandchildren. "To have someone who is interested in absolutely every aspect of my life is like a shield against the world," Leith added.
Family Background and Career Highlights
Prue Leith has two children, Danny Kruger and Li-Da Kruger, from her first marriage, along with five grandchildren. She first rose to fame on British television through her role on Great British Menu from 2005 to 2016. Reflecting on her initial meeting with John Playfair, she admitted it wasn't love at first sight, as she "wasn't concentrating" at the time.
Her honest admission about age and relationships highlights the challenges and vulnerabilities that can come with later-life romance, even for a public figure like Leith. This story adds a personal dimension to her recent career moves and public persona.
