Scott Mills' Career Grinds to a Halt After BBC Dismissal
Scott Mills, once a prominent BBC Radio 2 star, has seen his career abruptly halted following his dismissal from the broadcaster over allegations concerning his personal conduct. The corporation confirmed the termination of his contracts on Friday, March 27, 2026, after obtaining new information that contradicted its culture and values.
Allegations and Police Investigation
It has emerged that Mills, aged 53, was questioned by police under caution in 2018 regarding historical allegations of sexual offences dating back to between 1997 and 2000. The investigation, initiated in 2016, was closed in 2019 after the Crown Prosecution Service determined there was insufficient evidence to bring charges. The BBC acted decisively after receiving compelling new details, leading to his sacking.
Loss of BBC Radio 2 Role
Mills had taken over the Radio 2 breakfast show from Zoe Ball in January 2025, earning between £355,000 and £359,999 in the year leading up to April 2025, making him the corporation's 11th highest-paid star. His removal from the airwaves last week marks a significant downfall for a broadcaster who had been a familiar voice to millions of listeners for over two decades.
Renaming of the Scott Mills Bridge
In a symbolic blow, the Scott Mills Bridge at the M3 Fleet service station in Hampshire is set to be renamed. Originally named after him in 2016 following a light-hearted campaign with former co-star Chris Stark, the bridge's plaque, adorned with his autograph, will likely be removed. Sources indicate that Welcome Break, the service station operator, aims to distance itself from the scandal.
Charity Patronage Withdrawn
Neuroblastoma UK has severed ties with Mills, removing him as a celebrity patron. The charity, which funds research into treatments for childhood cancer, confirmed the decision following his BBC dismissal. However, the MS Society has stated that Mills remains a patron for now, though they are monitoring developments closely.
Podcast Cancellations
Mills has also lost his involvement in several podcasts. His Pop Top 10 podcast with friend Rylan Clark, launched in September 2024, has been pulled and will not return as scheduled. Additionally, he has been replaced by Tyler West as host of The Detour podcast, related to the Race Across The World celebrity edition.
Mills' Statement and Response
Through his lawyers, Mills issued a statement acknowledging the police investigation and expressing gratitude for support from colleagues and listeners. He emphasized that the CPS found insufficient evidence for charges and requested privacy, noting the allegations date back nearly 30 years and the investigation concluded seven years ago.
The BBC has pledged to conduct further work to understand what was known internally about the allegations at the time, underscoring the ongoing repercussions of this high-profile sacking in the entertainment industry.
