Vernon Kay has offered a rare and intimate glimpse into his long-standing marriage with television presenter Tess Daly, emphasising the importance of mutual decision-making in their relationship. The BBC radio host, who currently fronts the new BBC programme Do You Know Your Place? alongside The Traitors star Paul Gorton, disclosed that he and Daly spent a considerable amount of time deliberating over her departure from Strictly Come Dancing last year.
Navigating Major Life Changes Together
During an appearance on ITV's Loose Men in November last year, alongside panellists Joe Swash, Rob Rinder, and Jordan Banjo, Kay elaborated on the dynamics of making significant choices as a couple. "It's a team effort, a relationship is when two become one," he remarked. "It's important that you make those big decisions together, or at least, make a decision and then share it."
Reflecting specifically on Daly's exit from the beloved BBC dance competition, Kay explained, "We had a big one recently in our household, and we sat and shared it for quite a while, which is what you have to do when something has been in your life for so long, like Strictly Come Dancing." He stressed the necessity of thorough discussion, adding, "You have to sit and make a decision and share it, and come up with how, what, where, when, why."
Supporting a Career Milestone
Kay's support for his wife extended beyond private conversations into public endorsements. Following the announcement last autumn that Daly and co-host Claudia Winkleman would be leaving Strictly Come Dancing after the series concluded, Kay promptly demonstrated his backing. He reshared articles on his Instagram Stories and posted a fan illustration of the duo, captioned, "What a fantastic duo they have been."
Further showcasing his pride, Kay celebrated Daly's receipt of an MBE honour in the King's Birthday Honours for her services to broadcasting. She collected the accolade at Windsor Castle on 12th November, and Kay marked the occasion with a heartfelt tribute on Instagram. "Huge congratulations Tess, since we met your drive, dedication, focus and professionalism in how you work and live is a huge inspiration," he wrote.
He continued, "You deserve your MBE today. 21 years at the helm of Strictly Come Dancing is a record for any female in entertainment telly. Let's pop those corks!" Daly responded with a series of red heart emojis, highlighting the warmth of their partnership.
A Lasting Partnership and New Ventures
Married since 2003 and parents to two daughters, Kay and Daly have built a resilient relationship that balances personal and professional lives. Kay, who took over Ken Bruce's BBC Radio 2 programme in May 2023, continues to expand his broadcasting portfolio. His latest project, Do You Know Your Place?, sees him teaming up with Paul Gorton for a weekday gameshow on BBC Two at 6.30 PM.
This new role underscores Kay's ongoing presence in the entertainment industry, while Daly's departure from Strictly Come Dancing marks the end of an era, yet her legacy remains celebrated. The couple's approach to decision-making serves as a testament to their enduring bond, blending collaboration with unwavering support through career transitions and accolades alike.
