Vernon Kay's Terrifying Mexico City Ordeal with Police Over Street Drinking

BBC Radio 2 presenter Vernon Kay has revealed a deeply unsettling experience during a work trip to Mexico City, where he and a co-star were threatened with potential imprisonment by local police. The 51-year-old broadcaster described the incident as genuinely "scary" when recounting his worst moment abroad.

The Incident That Sparked Police Confrontation

The troubling episode occurred while Kay was in Mexico hosting coverage for Formula E, the electric motor racing championship. "We were in Mexico hosting Formula E," Kay explained to The Metro. "We came out of a bar and my co-host was carrying a beer. In Mexico City, you're not allowed to drink on the streets."

This simple act of carrying an open alcoholic beverage in public violated strict Mexican laws that prohibit drinking on streets, carrying open alcohol containers, and public intoxication. According to travel authority Frommer's, violations can result in substantial fines and even imprisonment under certain circumstances.

The Police Encounter and 'Subsidiary Fee' Demand

Local police officers quickly spotted the violation and confronted the television personalities. "The police saw us and questioned us," Kay recounted. "They threatened to take us to jail unless we paid what they called a 'subsidiary fee' to cover administration costs."

Initially fearing an exorbitant penalty, Kay and his colleague prepared for the worst. "We were thinking it was going to be a thousand quid," he admitted. After multiple searches using Google Translate and currency conversion tools, they discovered the demanded amount was actually just £50.

"That was quite scary - paying off the Mexican police," Kay reflected on the unsettling experience of what felt like an informal resolution to a potentially serious legal situation.

Professional Commitments and Family Balance

This wasn't Kay's first professional visit to Mexico - he previously traveled there in 2021 for the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. Such international assignments highlight the challenges of balancing work and family life for the broadcaster.

Kay has spoken openly about the difficulties of being away from his wife, television presenter Tess Daly, and their two daughters, Phoebe (21) and Amber (16). He particularly regretted missing his youngest daughter's school event during one trip, though expressed gratitude for regular updates from Tess.

"It's one of those things where I'll go to a city and then tell Tess and the kids about it and say, 'We've got to come here,'" he shared with OK! Magazine. The family subsequently visited Rome together, a destination they'd never experienced as a unit, demonstrating their commitment to finding meaningful family time amidst busy schedules.

Maintaining Relationships and Career Transitions

Kay and Daly have been married for over two decades, and ahead of Valentine's Day, Kay emphasized the importance of sustaining romance beyond calendar dates. "It's important to be romantic and make those gestures," he noted, adding, "But let's be honest - if you're in a relationship and you only make a romantic gesture on February 14, then you've got to ask yourself a few questions."

The interview comes during a period of significant career transition for Kay's wife. Last year, Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman announced their departure from Strictly Come Dancing after jointly hosting the main show since 2014. In an emotional statement, Daly described the programme as "one of the greatest joys and privileges of my career" while acknowledging it felt like "the right time to hand over the reins."

The BBC has yet to announce replacements for the iconic presenting duo, though Vernon Kay has publicly supported Alex Jones and Rylan Clark as potential successors for the coveted roles.
