The music world is mourning the loss of British rock legend Dave Mason, who has died at the age of 79. The co-founder and lead singer of the influential band Traffic passed away peacefully at his home in Gardnerville, Nevada on Sunday, April 19th.
A Peaceful Passing at Home
Mason's death was confirmed through an emotional statement posted to his official Instagram account on Tuesday. The statement described his final moments as "a storybook ending" that reflected how he lived his life - on his own terms.
"On Sunday, April 19, after cooking an amazing dinner with his beloved wife Winifred, he sat down to take a nap with sweet Star (the maltese) at his feet," the family's statement revealed. "He passed away peacefully, in his favorite chair, surrounded by the beautiful Carson Valley that he loved so much."
While the exact cause of death hasn't been officially disclosed, Mason had been dealing with significant health challenges in recent years. He previously suffered from a serious heart condition that forced him to cancel his Traffic Jam Tour in 2024, and he had announced plans to retire from touring in 2025 due to ongoing health issues.
Traffic's Founding and Musical Legacy
Dave Mason co-founded the English rock band Traffic in Birmingham in 1967 alongside Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood. The band quickly rose to prominence with their debut album Mr. Fantasy in 1967, followed by their self-titled 1968 album that included their smash hit Feelin' Alright?
A Prolific Career Beyond Traffic
After leaving Traffic shortly after their initial success, Mason embarked on a successful solo career throughout the 1970s, producing hits including Only You Know and I Know and We Just Disagree. His musical journey took another significant turn when he briefly joined Fleetwood Mac in the mid-1990s, releasing the album Time with the iconic group in 1995 and touring with them from 1994 until 1995.
Mason's influence extended far beyond his own bands. Throughout his career, he recorded with some of music's biggest names, including:
- Jimi Hendrix
- The Rolling Stones
- Michael Jackson
- Eric Clapton
- Paul McCartney and Wings
- George Harrison
Family and Personal Life
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee is survived by his wife Winifred Wilson, his daughter Danielle, and several nephews and nieces. His passing follows the earlier deaths of his son, True, and his sister, Valerie Leonard.
In their statement, Mason's family emphasized his lasting impact: "He leaves a lasting imprint on the soundtrack of our lives and the hearts he has lifted. His legacy will be cherished forever."
Mason's representative also confirmed his passing to Deadline, describing him as "a celebrated songwriter, musician, singer, and author" who "lived a remarkable life devoted to the music and the people he loved."
