The Australian music scene is in mourning following the death of celebrated drummer Peter McFarlane. The rock legend passed away on the Gold Coast on Saturday due to complications arising from a stroke.
A Career Forged in Rock
McFarlane's celebrated career began in the early 1970s. He was best known as the drummer and backing vocalist for the acclaimed hard rock band Finch between 1973 and 1978. The group was one of Australia's most beloved rock acts of the decade, famed for their 1978 hit single 'Where Were You', which reached number 25 on the national charts.
After Finch dissolved, McFarlane was recruited by John 'Swanee' Swan in 1979 to join his band, Swanee. Swan is the older brother of iconic singer Jimmy Barnes. Throughout his career, McFarlane shared stages with international giants, having supported acts like Richie Blackmore, Status Quo, Thin Lizzy, and AC/DC.
Heartfelt Tributes from the Music Community
The news was confirmed in a social media statement by his former bandmate, Bob Spencer, who later played guitar for glam rockers Skyhooks. Spencer wrote: "RIP to Peter McFarlane, Finch and Contraband drummer, who passed away last night. Having fought back after a debilitating stroke a little while back, only to succumb to another a few days ago. My thoughts are with his stoic wife, Kerry."
His death came just two days after John Swan posted an emotional tribute on Facebook. The 73-year-old singer announced: "Just had some terrible news. My old mate and drummer, Peter McFarlane, is ready to go after another stroke." Swan added that he had spoken to McFarlane's wife of 25 years, Kerry, signing off with "Be at peace, brother."
A Legacy Remembered by Fans
Devastated fans quickly flooded online comment sections to pay their respects to the first-rate musician. One fan lamented, "Sad news of another great muso passing. Finch was one of the greats," while another remembered him as "A top bloke and an even better drummer."
Peter McFarlane's passing marks the loss of a foundational figure in Australia's 1970s rock landscape. His powerful drumming and contributions to bands like Finch and Swanee have left an indelible mark on the nation's musical heritage.
