God of War Creator Blasts Amazon's First Look at TV Adaptation as 'Dumb'
David Jaffe, the original creator of the iconic God of War video game franchise, has delivered a scathing critique of the first-look image from Amazon Prime Video's forthcoming live-action television adaptation. In a recent YouTube video, Jaffe, 54, tore into the promotional picture, which features actor Ryan Hurst portraying the legendary Spartan warrior Kratos in a pose that has sparked widespread discussion.
Jaffe's Harsh Assessment of the Kratos Image
The controversial image shows Hurst as Kratos standing with his hands on his knees, observing his son Atreus, played by Callum Vinson, as the boy practices archery in a wooded setting. Jaffe did not mince words in his evaluation, stating emphatically, "Kratos in this pose with this expression, not the guy's face, but this expression, he just looks stupid." He questioned the strategic wisdom behind selecting this particular image for the character's debut to a global audience.
"If you're going to reveal, to most people, a brand new character that you hope is going to carry your series, for the first time, and they've never really seen this before, and this is the way you introduce them?" Jaffe pondered aloud, highlighting what he perceives as a significant misstep in marketing the highly anticipated series.
Potential Creative Intentions Behind the Portrayal
Jaffe speculated that the creative team behind the Amazon adaptation might be intentionally attempting to present a more nuanced version of Kratos, moving beyond the character's traditional depiction as a vessel of pure vengeance and rage. "Maybe they're like, 'Well, what we really want to focus on is the father-son story. And if we focus on him being like, Spartan rage, and all that, maybe people are like, 'I don't want to watch that show,'" he suggested as a possible rationale.
However, Jaffe remained unconvinced by this potential explanation, offering a blunt alternative assessment of the image's composition. "OK maybe. But then, at that point, could you find a picture that doesn't look like he's s***ting in the woods? Cause that's what the picture looks like," he remarked with evident frustration.
Clarification and Praise for the Production Team
Despite his vehement criticism of the promotional material, Jaffe was careful to clarify that his disapproval is limited to this specific image and does not reflect on the overall quality of the production. He explicitly praised showrunner Ron Moore, describing him as "awesome" and "talented," and expressed confidence that the live-action series will ultimately be successful.
"I'm sure everybody's trying real hard, [but] it's so dumb," Jaffe concluded with a laugh, before adding, "Two things can be true. This can be a terrible image, and it is. It's so bad in so many ways." The Independent has reached out to Amazon for comment regarding Jaffe's remarks, but no official response has been provided at this time.
Background on the God of War Franchise and Amazon Adaptation
The God of War franchise began in 2005 with the release of the original video game for the PlayStation 2 console. The early instalments in the series are firmly rooted in Greek mythology, charting Kratos's brutal quest for vengeance against the pantheon of Olympian gods. More recent games have shifted focus to Norse mythology, depicting Kratos on a path toward redemption alongside his son, Atreus, as they encounter various deities and figures from Scandinavian lore.
Amazon officially announced its order for a live-action television adaptation in 2022. The series, currently in production in Vancouver, Canada, will follow Kratos and Atreus as they undertake a poignant journey to scatter the ashes of Faye, their wife and mother respectively. According to the official series logline, their adventures will explore Kratos's attempts to mentor his son into becoming a better god, while Atreus strives to teach his father how to embrace his humanity. A specific release date for the series has not yet been announced by Amazon Prime Video.
