Ticketmaster Intercepts Scalpers Selling Thousands of Harry Styles Tickets

Ticketmaster has announced a significant crackdown on scalpers, revealing that it caught individuals selling "thousands of illegal" tickets for Harry Styles' upcoming New York City concerts. The company has pledged to cancel these tickets and release them back to fans at their original prices, aiming to enhance transparency and fairness in the ticketing process.

Fans Outraged by Exorbitant Tour Prices

Earlier this year, fans expressed fury over exorbitant ticket prices for Harry Styles' Together, Together tour. The most expensive VIP package for his 30-show residency at Madison Square Garden was priced at $1,667, sparking widespread outrage among concertgoers.

In a letter posted on social media, Ticketmaster president Saumil Mehta detailed the company's efforts to address these issues. "I want to walk you through what happened here, and how we're working with Harry and his team to help real fans," Mehta stated. He explained that scalpers used multiple accounts and fake identities to bypass ticket limits and resell tickets for profit.

Ticket Cancellation and Reallocation Process

Mehta confirmed that all illegal tickets have been canceled, with none transferred to fans. "We've canceled those tickets, none of which had been transferred to fans, and we are working with the tour to release them back to fans at the original price," he added. This action is part of a broader initiative to identify and penalize bad actors, including permanent account bans for violations.

Scalpers often target the lowest-priced and most in-demand tickets to maximize profits through markups. "This impacts many tours, and Harry's residency was a huge target," Mehta noted. He provided corrected ticket prices, including fees: 19% are $50, 77% are under $95, and 100% are under $130.

Assurance for Legitimate Ticket Holders

Mehta clarified that no canceled accounts belonged to genuine fans, and no scalped tickets were distributed to them. Fans who purchased tickets directly through Ticketmaster remain unaffected, as do those with transferred or resale tickets in their accounts. This policy also applies to attendees at shows outside New York City.

"We stop most scalpers before they ever buy tickets, and we catch more before those tickets can be resold," Mehta concluded. "But fraud evolves, and so do we. I come from a fintech background, and tackling problems like this is part of why I joined the ticketing industry, and we'll keep getting better at it."

New Ticket Request System for Fans

Fans interested in attending Styles' upcoming concerts must now submit a ticket request through Ticketmaster. Requests can be made from April 30 at 12 p.m. EDT until May 1 at 5 p.m. EDT. Ticketmaster has stated that while anyone can request tickets, priority will be given to fans without tickets to the New York City shows.

Customers are limited to four tickets for two different shows, totaling eight tickets. Each request requires payment details, with charges applied only if selected. After submission, an email summary will be sent, and confirmations for fulfilled requests will be issued by May 8 at 11:50 p.m. EDT.

Background on Legal Challenges

This announcement follows a recent federal jury ruling that Ticketmaster and its parent company Live Nation are operating a harmful monopoly over major concert venues. Live Nation has indicated plans to appeal any unfavorable rulings, highlighting ongoing legal and regulatory scrutiny in the ticketing industry.

Harry Styles is set to embark on his Together, Together tour starting May 16 in Amsterdam, with the New York concerts being a highly anticipated segment of the global series.
