Angela Rippon, the oldest contestant in the history of Strictly Come Dancing, has thrown her hat into the ring to become a host of the BBC's flagship entertainment programme. This potential move comes as current presenters Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly prepare to leave the show after the current season concludes next month.
From Contestant to Potential Host
The 81-year-old broadcasting legend, who competed on the show in 2023 at the age of 79, confirmed her interest when questioned about stepping into the vacant roles. "If they asked me, of course," Rippon stated, adding, "It’s a very popular programme. Claudia and Tess have done a fabulous job, but no job is for life." She emphasised that the next host must be "someone that will bring the glamour, and just what everyone loves about Strictly".
Rippon is no stranger to the Strictly format, having previously hosted the original Come Dancing series between 1988 and 1991. Her history with the BBC adds a poignant layer to this potential appointment; she revealed that the BBC’s then-director-general, Lord (John) Birt, told her she’d "had her day" when she was just 50 years old.
A Storied Broadcasting Career
With nearly 60 years in the industry, Angela Rippon's career is formidable. The veteran journalist was described as the "dream signing" when she agreed to take part in Strictly Come Dancing in 2023. During her time on the show, she famously dazzled viewers by recreating her iconic high kick from the 1982 Royal Variety Show.
Her professional journey includes:
- Presenting the original Come Dancing series (1988-1991)
- Serving as a Top Gear presenter in the 1970s
- Co-hosting Holiday Hit Squad with Helen Skelton and Joe Crowley
- A long tenure as a newsreader
She was the eighth celebrity to be eliminated from the 2023 season, exiting in Blackpool after performing an American Smooth to Tea For Two with her professional partner, Kai Widdrington.
Facing Stiff Competition
Despite her immense experience and clear passion for the show, Rippon is not the only name in the frame for the coveted presenting role. She faces significant competition from other well-known figures. Former This Morning presenter Holly Willoughby has been linked with the position, as has comedian Alan Carr, following his recent triumph on The Celebrity Traitors.
Since her stint on the dance floor, Rippon has remained connected to the Strictly world. She has stayed close to her former pro partner, 30-year-old Kai Widdrington, and the pair recently launched “Let’s Dance!”, a project designed to inspire people of all ages to experience the joy of dancing.
Whether the BBC will choose to return to its roots with Rippon or opt for a new direction remains to be seen, but the broadcaster from Plymouth, Devon, has made it clear she is ready for the challenge.
