The BBC has unleashed a brutally compelling first trailer for its upcoming drama series, Half Man, which delves into the tumultuous relationship between two warring brothers. Created by Baby Reindeer sensation Richard Gadd, who also takes on the lead role of Ruben, the series promises a raw and gripping narrative.
A Glimpse into the Brothers' Turbulent World
The trailer offers viewers their initial look at Richard Gadd, 36, and co-star Jamie Bell, 40, portraying the 'brothers' Ruben and Niall, respectively. It traces their volatile history, beginning when Ruben moves in with Niall's family as a teenager. The clip starkly contrasts Ruben's dangerous streak with Niall's more mild-mannered nature, setting the stage for intense drama.
Plot and Character Dynamics
According to the BBC synopsis, the story revolves around two individuals not related by blood but bound as closely as brothers. One is fierce and loyal, while the other is meek and mild-mannered. Their inseparable youth, forged through death and circumstance, is tested when Ruben reappears at Niall's wedding three decades later, acting shifty and on edge. This triggers an explosion of violence that propels the narrative back through their lives from the 1980s to the present day.
The six-episode drama, spanning 40 years, captures the good, bad, terrible, funny, angry, and challenging moments in the lives of these broken men. It explores themes of brotherhood, violence, and the fragile nature of male relationships, suggesting that the closest bonds can break the hardest when things fall apart.
Supporting Cast and Production Details
The ensemble cast includes Mitchell Robertson and Stuart Campbell as the younger versions of Niall and Ruben, with Neve McIntosh playing Niall's mother Lori and Marianne McIvor as Ruben's mother Maura. Other notable actors featured are Charlie De Melo, Bilal Hasna, Julie Cullen, Amy Manson, Anjli Mohindra, Tim Downie, Tom Andrews, Philippine Velge, Stuart McQuarrie, Sandy Batchelor, Piers Ewart, and Scot Greenan. Newcomers Charlotte Blackwood, Calum Manchip, and Kate Robson-Stuart round out the talent.
Filming for Half Man concluded last year in and around Glasgow, with Richard Gadd spotted behind the camera in a blue padded coat and baseball cap, while Jamie Bell got into character wearing a smart wool coat and grey trousers. The series is set to release weekly from April 24 at 6am on BBC iPlayer, followed by transmissions on BBC One and BBC Scotland within the same week.
Personal Insights from Richard Gadd
Although Half Man is not autobiographical, Richard Gadd has shared that he relates to its themes of confusion, trauma, and abuse. Having faced various ordeals in his twenties, the Scottish actor is now sober and reflects on how his dark thoughts paradoxically fueled his success. He recalled struggling but growing wiser, admitting he still has down days and is not the finished article, with a past where darkness was overwhelming.
In an interview with The Times, Gadd revealed that therapy and distraction did not help him; instead, he credited his writing for allowing him to work through the pain. He expressed a wish to have escaped but found that the writing process enabled him to navigate the turmoil and emerge on the other side, highlighting the cathartic power of his creative work.
