A classic British detective drama makes its long-awaited return to television screens this week. The rebooted series, now simply titled 'Lynley', premieres on BBC One on Monday, 5 January 2026, bringing a fresh interpretation of Elizabeth George's beloved characters to a new generation.
A New Duo for a New Era
Stepping into the iconic roles of Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley and Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers are actors Leo Suter and Sofia Barclay. Suter, best known for his role as Harald Sigurdsson in Vikings: Valhalla, takes on the part of the aristocratic DI Lynley. His partner, DS Havers, is portrayed by Sofia Barclay, whose credits include Ted Lasso and Prime Target.
The new series, like the original which starred Nathaniel Parker and Sharon Small, explores the dynamic between the two detectives from starkly different social backgrounds. They must overcome their personal and cultural differences to form an effective crime-solving partnership.
Leo Suter discussed the challenge of reviving a character with a 25-year history, stating he was initially unaware of the books. "It was such a wonderful discovery to uncover the world of Lynley," he said. He acknowledged watching the original performance by Nat Parker but emphasised that their version would be distinct, shaped by the quarter-century gap since the first show aired.
Episode Guide and Key Details
The series launches with a feature-length 90-minute episode at 8:30pm on BBC One. The plot of the opener sees Lynley and Havers investigating a suspicious death on the small estuary island of Salcott. Their search for a priceless piece of art uncovers not one, but two crimes, testing their fledgling partnership from the outset as they strive to prove themselves to their superior, DCI Brian Nies.
The drama will unfold across four 90-minute episodes, airing weekly. The second episode will broadcast at 8:30pm on Monday, 12 January. Its synopsis teases a missing person case with personal ties to Lynley's past, involving a former classmate, Helen Clyde, and increasing pressure from DCI Nies to make an arrest.
Meet the Supporting Cast
The series boasts a strong supporting ensemble. Daniel Mays (Line of Duty, Des) plays the detectives' station chief, DCI Brian Nies. Niamh Walsh (The Sandman, Good Omens) appears as Helen Clyde. The cast is rounded out by Michael Workeye as DC Tony Bekele and Joshua Sher as Simon St James, bringing a depth of experience from shows like This Is Going To Hurt and Game of Thrones respectively.
This revival promises to honour the legacy of the original novels and television series while carving its own path for contemporary audiences, blending classic detective storytelling with a modern sensibility.
