Carol McGiffin Denies Loose Women Return Rumours

Carol McGiffin Issues Blunt Denial Over Loose Women Return Speculation

Broadcaster Carol McGiffin has delivered a very direct response to rumours suggesting she might be returning to the ITV daytime show Loose Women to rescue it from potential cancellation. The 66-year-old, who was a regular panelist from the programme's launch in 2000, took to Instagram to set the record straight after seeing a magazine article posing the question: 'Carol's Loose Women return, could she save the show?'

Clarification on Social Media and Contract Issues

In her social media post, McGiffin stated: 'Just wanted to say I did not instigate this article but I’m flattered that [they] even ask the question ‘could she save the show!!!' She added emphatically: 'And, for the record, not a chance of a return.' McGiffin explained she is content with her current life, saying: 'I am very happy being semi-retired and living a lovely life with my gorgeous husband in the South of France. Thank you.'

This follows her revelation in April 2023 that she left Loose Women due to dissatisfaction with the contract offered by ITV. She told Best magazine: 'I feel quite upset about it, if I'm honest, because although it is my decision, I felt like it was one I was being forced to make. No one in their right mind would have signed that contract. And I can't see a way back from it.'

Free Speech Concerns and Show Comparisons

Reports from The Mail on Sunday indicated that a free speech controversy contributed to her departure, stemming from backlash over comments made during a TNT Radio interview. In that interview, McGiffin reflected: 'I always look back at when I started working in television and radio as the good old days because they were much less policed, I suppose. Much less restricted and it was a freer place to be.'

She contrasted this with modern television, noting: 'When I look back at the old Loose Womens I used to do from 2000 all the until I left in 2013, they're completely different. There is so much offence. People take so much offence at so much and they never used to.'

ITV Daytime Schedule Changes and Cuts

These developments occur against a backdrop of significant changes to ITV's daytime programming. In May 2025, it was announced that Lorraine and Loose Women would be axed for half the year, with Lorraine's runtime reduced by 30 minutes. ITV Daytime bosses implemented substantial cuts, resulting in over 220 job losses.

Key adjustments include:

  • Good Morning Britain now occupies the 9am to 10am slot for 22 weeks annually, taking over from Lorraine.
  • For the remaining 30 weeks, Lorraine will air five days a week, eliminating the need for Friday stand-in presenters Ranvir Singh and Christine Lampard.
  • Lorraine's show has been shortened to just 30 minutes, running from 9:30am to 10am.

ITV sources explained that these cuts to the daytime schedule are intended to reallocate resources towards drama productions. Additionally, ITV Studios will no longer produce Good Morning Britain; instead, it will be made by ITN, the organisation responsible for ITV News.

Recent Broadcasting Interruptions

Further disruption occurred at the start of March, when both Loose Women and Lorraine were pulled off air for several weeks. Typically, ITV's weekday lineup features Good Morning Britain from 6am, followed by Lorraine, This Morning, and then Loose Women. However, since Monday 9 March 2026, Good Morning Britain has extended to 10am, with This Morning airing until 12:30pm, leaving no slots for Lorraine or Loose Women during that period.

Carol McGiffin's firm denial of a return underscores the ongoing challenges facing ITV's daytime shows, as the network navigates contractual disputes, free speech debates, and sweeping schedule reforms aimed at reshaping its programming strategy.
