The Inbetweeners Poised for Major Comeback with Stage Show and Netflix Project

Following the remarkable West End success of Only Fools And Horses, the iconic British comedy The Inbetweeners is reportedly being developed into a stage show. This theatrical adaptation could take the form of a musical or a play, allowing creators to preserve the show's famously risqué humour without censorship.

Uncensored Humour for Devoted Fans

An industry insider revealed to The Sun that a stage production would fully embrace the series' most outrageous jokes. 'The beauty of a stage show is that people won’t just be happy with all the muckiest jokes being in there — they’ll be filling the theatre expecting to see and hear them,' the source stated. They added that, similar to other comedies transitioning to the West End, episodes are likely to be adapted directly for the stage, ensuring fans receive exactly what they anticipate without complaint.

The Daily Mail has contacted Banijay, the production company holding the rights, for official comment on these developments.

Netflix Deal Signals International Return

In a parallel development, The Inbetweeners is said to be returning to screens after a 16-year absence, following a multi-million pound agreement with Netflix. The beloved E4 comedy, which last aired in 2010 and spawned two successful films in 2011 and 2014, is poised to reach a global audience with this new project.

Creators Iain Morris and Damon Beesley reportedly finalised a deal with Banijay UK in October to develop new content featuring the famous four friends. Initially, the nature of the project was unclear, but it is now being finalised as a movie for release on the streaming giant.

Original Cast Expected to Reunite

A source close to the production indicated that the comeback is hoped to include the entire original cast, comprising Simon Bird, Joe Thomas, James Buckley, and Blake Harrison, alongside Emily Atack, who played Charlotte 'Big Jugs' Hinchliffe. 'Inbetweeners fans will be thrilled and relieved because when talk of a reboot emerged last year, there were fears it might not turn out to be a telly project,' the source told The Sun.

They elaborated that Netflix's interest stems from the show's resurgence in popularity since its episodes began streaming on the platform, introducing it to a new generation of viewers. The deal is nearing final approval, with ongoing discussions about production schedules, storylines, and casting details.

The Daily Mail has also reached out to Netflix representatives for further comment on these exciting plans.

Creators Express Excitement for Future Adventures

In October, Morris and Beesley confirmed in a statement that they are plotting new adventures for the characters after signing with Banijay UK. 'It's incredibly exciting to be plotting more adventures for our four favourite friends (ooh friends),' they said. The project was initially speculated to involve a new TV series, film, or stage adaptation, with talks already underway about reviving the cult favourite.

Patrick Holland, chief executive of Banijay, expressed his delight at collaborating with the creators, noting their 'infectious creative vision for the brand which will resonate with audiences old and new.' The company emphasised that the deal unlocks potential for bringing The Inbetweeners back across various platforms, including film, television, and stage.

Cast Enthusiastic About Potential Reunion

Joe Thomas previously hinted at the cast's eagerness to return, revealing on a podcast that the group remains close friends and would 'jump at the chance' to work together again. 'We're all still around. We're all still in each other's lives. We all still like each other. And if it was something that came up, I think we would want to do it,' he stated, fuelling anticipation for a full reunion in both the stage show and Netflix project.
