Justin Berfield, the actor best known for playing Reese in the beloved 2000s sitcom Malcolm in the Middle, has made a surprising return to acting after a two-decade absence from the spotlight. Now 40 years old, Berfield is back in his iconic role for a four-part revival series titled Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, which premiered on Friday. The revival reunites him with original cast members Bryan Cranston, Jane Kaczmarek, Frankie Muniz, and Christopher Masterson.
A Deliberate Step Away from Show Business
In a new interview with Us Weekly, the reclusive actor opened up about his decision to step away from acting and his unexpected comeback. Berfield explained that he began acting at the tender age of five and worked consistently throughout his childhood, culminating in a seven-year stint on Malcolm in the Middle. "I just grew up working constantly, and I wanted to try something different," he told the outlet, reflecting on his desire for a change after years in the industry.
Exploring New Roles and Family Life
During his time away from acting, Berfield ventured into producing, working on projects such as The Country Bears, Romance and Cigarettes, Filthy Rich: Cattle Drive, and Sons of Tucson. He also dedicated himself to being a stay-at-home dad to his two children, sharing that he got married and started a family, which made the years fly by. "Now it's been 20 years, and we're fortunate enough to be able to step back into it now," he said, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to return to his acting roots.
Berfield is married to Liza Almeida, and the couple has two children, including a daughter born in 2020 and another child born a few years later. While he generally keeps his family life private, he has occasionally shared glimpses of his children on Instagram. He noted the special experience of having his eldest daughter see him work on set, saying, "It was just really nice showing my eldest daughter just me working so she can actually see it's better than just turning on the TV and showing them something. She actually got to see me on set."
Low-Pressure Return to the Camera
Despite being away from acting for 20 years, Berfield maintained that he felt little to no nerves when stepping back in front of the television cameras. "I’d stepped away from acting for 20 years now, so I didn't have a lot of pressure," he explained. "Obviously I had pressure on myself because I wanted to do a good job. I wanted people to enjoy the show, but it was more just me enjoying the moment too. For me, it was a little bit different. It was low pressure."
Reuniting with the Original Team
Working with the same cast and crew, including series creator Linwood Boomer, made the transition back into acting smooth and enjoyable. Berfield expressed confidence in the revival's quality, stating, "I had very little stress that it wasn't going to be great because he wasn't going to come back and do something that he didn't feel was great. When he was on board, he wrote it with a few of the original writers of Malcolm." He added, "I knew it was going to be funny. I knew it was going to have the flavor and the familiarity of what this crazy family is. So I wasn't concerned at all."
The revival series, which follows the dysfunctional middle-class family through the eyes of eldest son Malcolm, played by Frankie Muniz, is available to stream on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+. Berfield attended the New York premiere with his wife and daughters, marking a full-circle moment in his career.
Reflections on the Revival Experience
As production wrapped in May of last year, Berfield shared his thoughts on Instagram, writing, "Just reflecting on the final days on the Malcolm in the Middle Revival set. It was so amazing catching up with old friends and met some amazing new ones!" He continued, "We're so lucky that we got to come back to these characters after 20 years and see where they've been. I had so much fun getting to go back to my old life as an actor…now it's back to carpools and diapers!"
This heartfelt return highlights Berfield's journey from a child actor to a family man and back to the screen, offering fans a nostalgic yet fresh look at the characters they loved. With the revival now streaming, audiences can once again enjoy the chaotic charm of the Malcolm in the Middle family, brought to life by its original stars.
