Lisa Kudrow Declares The Comeback Season 3 as the Definitive End
Lisa Kudrow has officially confirmed that the upcoming third season of The Comeback will serve as the series' final installment. The actress, renowned for her role in Friends, stated that this decision ensures a respectful conclusion to the story of Valerie Cherish, the fading sitcom star she portrays.
Kudrow's Rationale for Ending the Series
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Kudrow, aged 62, explained her reasoning behind concluding the show. "I don't know if I'll want to do it again in 10 years," she admitted, highlighting the uncertainty of future reprisals. "So let's be done, that way no one is asking what's next or whether we will even want to do more."
She elaborated that the most respectful approach for both the audience and the character is to frame the narrative as a three-part story. "It's a trilogy, and this is the end," Kudrow asserted, emphasizing her commitment to providing a satisfying and complete arc for Valerie Cherish.
The Comeback's Turbulent History and Revival
The Comeback first premiered in 2005 but faced an early cancellation due to low ratings and mixed critical reviews. Series co-creator Michael Patrick King reflected on the initial disappointment, noting a significant disconnect between the creators' enthusiasm and the public's reception. "We were hit with such a wave of disbelief and confusion because what we had done connected with us in such a strong way," King recalled. "We should have been given a second season. I don't know why it didn't happen."
Kudrow shared her perspective on the cancellation, revealing that she did not feel disheartened at the time. "I felt really great about what we had done and knew that we couldn't have done better," she said. "Someone is making a mistake, and I knew it wasn't ours." Her patience paid off when the show was revived a decade later for a second season in 2014.
Season 3 Plot Details and Cast Information
The new season, set to debut more than 10 years after the second season and over 20 years since the show's inception, will follow Valerie Cherish as she takes on a role in a television series entirely written by artificial intelligence. This innovative plotline promises to explore contemporary themes in the entertainment industry.
Returning cast members include Dan Bucatinsky, Laura Silverman, Damian Young, and Tim Bagley. They will be joined by several newcomers, such as Matt Cook, Jack O'Brien, Ella Stiller, John Early, Barry Shabaka Henley, Abbi Jacobson, Tony Macht, Brittany O'Grady, Zane Phillips, Kudrow's son Julian Stern, and Andrew Scott.
Release Schedule and Critical Acclaim
Season three of The Comeback is scheduled to premiere on March 22 on HBO Max. New episodes will be released weekly, culminating in the series finale on May 10. Kudrow's portrayal of Valerie Cherish has already earned her two Outstanding Lead Actress Emmy nominations, underscoring the critical acclaim for her performance.
The announcement marks the end of a beloved series that has navigated cancellation and revival, ultimately securing its place as a cult favorite. Fans can anticipate a final season that not only concludes Valerie Cherish's journey but also delves into the evolving landscape of television production.
