Love Island Star Suicides Investigated in New Documentary

New Documentary to Probe Love Island Star Suicides and Aftermath

A new television documentary is reportedly in production to investigate the tragic suicides of former Love Island contestants Sophie Gradon and Mike Thalassitis. The programme aims to explore the contributing factors that may have led to their deaths, including the pressures of overnight fame, online trolling, and mental health challenges.

Tragic Losses That Shocked the Nation

Sophie Gradon, who appeared on the ITV2 reality series in 2016, took her own life in 2018. Mike Thalassitis, known affectionately as "Muggy Mike" during his 2017 stint on the show, died by suicide in 2019. Their deaths, occurring just a year apart, sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry and highlighted serious concerns about the welfare of reality TV participants.

The documentary is being produced by Story Films, with insiders indicating it will delve into the real-life stories of these two contestants. A television source told The Sun that producers intend to examine how the individuals coped with sudden celebrity status, abuse from trolls on social media platforms, and ongoing mental health struggles.

Examining Duty of Care and Evolving Practices

The programme will also scrutinise how the popular dating show has evolved over the years and how ITV has strengthened its approach to welfare, duty of care, and lessons learned from past tragedies. An ITV spokesperson emphasised that welfare remains their primary concern, stating they have extensive measures in place to support islanders before, during, and after their participation.

"We have continued to evolve our process with each series," the spokesperson explained, "as the level of social media and media attention around the islanders has increased. This includes enhanced psychological support, more detailed conversations with potential islanders regarding the impact of participation, bespoke training on social media, and a proactive aftercare package."

Sensitive Nature and Emotional Challenges

While the documentary aims to speak with several former contestants, sources have expressed concerns about the sensitive nature of the topic. One insider noted that many people close to Sophie and Mike are still dealing with raw emotions, and revisiting these events could be profoundly painful.

"This is a very painful topic for all involved," the source revealed. "A lot of people who were close to Sophie and Mike are still dealing with raw emotions so dredging it all back up will be painful."

Personal Accounts and Final Messages

The documentary is expected to include personal accounts from those who knew the stars. Montana Brown, a close friend and former co-star of Mike Thalassitis, has previously shared heartbreaking details about his final days. She revealed that Mike sent a text message to a friend shortly before his death, saying, "Mate, I don’t think I’m going to see you any more. I don’t think I’m going to see you ever again."

On the Take Flight podcast, Montana also recounted a phone conversation with Mike a few days before he died, where he expressed profound gratitude. "On reflection, I do think that was him saying goodbye," she said. "In hindsight it definitely was him saying goodbye."

An inquest into Mike's death confirmed he had taken his own life after consuming cocaine and alcohol. His passing, along with Sophie's and that of former host Caroline Flack, who also died by suicide, has sparked ongoing conversations about mental health support in the entertainment industry.
