Silent Witness Star Praises 'Brilliant' Prosthetics Team

The hit BBC drama Silent Witness is set to conclude next month, with tensions soaring to unprecedented levels among its characters. In a recent behind-the-scenes glimpse, star Emilia Fox paid tribute to the show's 'brilliant' makeup and prosthetics team, highlighting their meticulous work that brings the series' gruesome crime scenes to life.

Behind the Scenes of Silent Witness

The latest series has kept viewers on the edge of their seats, fueled by rumours that actor David Cave might exit his role as Jack Hodgson after his character's arrest. This followed a storyline where a man Jack fought in a drunken brawl ended up dead on Nikki Alexander's examination table, though Jack was later released when it was revealed the victim died post-fight.

Silent Witness has never shied away from depicting the brutal murders investigated by its forensic team. In an Instagram video, the show offered a rare look into its prosthetic department, where experts detailed the painstaking accuracy required for their craft.

The 'Body Dungeon' and Realistic Effects

Walking into the prop store, dubbed the 'body dungeon', Linda Morton revealed that the programme retains all bodies used on the show, including skeletons, half-eaten corpses, and various body parts. Makeup, hair, and prosthetics supervisor Alice Streater explained, 'We also have our own research books that we use that are revolting. But, we have to use them because it's the real images that help us make things look the most realistic that we can.'

Linda shared that once scripts arrive, she must devise ways to recreate scenes within budget. For instance, she demonstrated a fake head that needed its teeth altered to match an actor's, using a tiny camera to inspect the inside of a cheek for authenticity.

Emilia Fox's Heartfelt Tribute

Actress Emilia Fox, who plays Nikki Alexander, commented on the post, praising the team's dedication. She said, 'This is brilliant! We are so lucky to have such an amazing makeup and prosthetics team on SW, whose attention to detail and reality is truly off the scale, astonishing, and makes our job as actors so much easier because everything looks and feels so real!'

She added, 'Thank you, Linda & Alice, for doing this behind the scenes. And the most massive thank you to you, your team, and Paul for your never-ending brilliant work, as well as always being such fun to be with and for having such a welcoming make-up truck to all.'

Silent Witness continues to be available for streaming on BBC iPlayer, captivating audiences with its blend of forensic drama and realistic special effects as it approaches its finale.
