SNL UK Launches with Host Tina Fey from London

In a landmark moment for British television, the highly anticipated Saturday Night Live UK is set to premiere this weekend, broadcast live from London with US actress and comedian Tina Fey as the inaugural host. The series, a Sky Original production, will launch with a special 75-minute episode on Saturday evening, marking the debut of this iconic comedy format on UK shores.

Live from London: A New Era of Comedy

The premiere episode will feature the classic opening line, "Live from London, it's Saturday Night," as Tina Fey takes the stage. Fey, aged 55, is renowned for her role as head writer and lead cast member on the US version of Saturday Night Live, bringing a wealth of experience to this new venture. Joining her as the first musical guest will be the Isle of Wight band Wet Leg, adding a distinctly British flavour to the show's entertainment lineup.

Format and Structure of the Show

Modelled after NBC's long-running late-night comedy show, Saturday Night Live UK will consist of six episodes, each written in the week leading up to the live broadcast. The 75-minute format will include several key segments: an opening monologue by the host, topical sketches that riff on current events, and a UK adaptation of the satirical news segment, The Weekend Update. Every episode is staged in front of a live studio audience, ensuring an energetic and interactive atmosphere.

Behind the Scenes: Writing Team

Heading the creative team is Jonno Johnson, who serves as the head writer for the series. He is assisted by Charlie Skelton, known for 8 Out of 10 Cats, who will lead the writing for The Weekend Update segment. The writing staff includes notable names such as Al Roberts from Stath Lets Flats, Bella Hull from Have I Got News For You, and comedians Celya AB, Chris Cantrill, Grainne Maguire, Humphrey Ker, and James Farmer, ensuring a blend of established and emerging comedic talent.

Legacy and Availability

The series will air every Saturday from March 21 on Sky and the streaming service Now, with catch-up options available for viewers who miss the live broadcast.
