Spielberg Completes EGOT with Grammy Win at 2026 Awards

Steven Spielberg has officially entered one of Hollywood's most prestigious circles, achieving the coveted EGOT status after securing his first Grammy Award at the 2026 ceremony in Los Angeles. The legendary filmmaker, now 79 years old, completed his long-awaited quest across television, music, film, and theatre on Sunday night, joining an elite group of just 21 artists to date.

A Milestone Achievement Decades in the Making

The director and producer earned this honour through Music by John Williams, a documentary he produced about his longtime collaborator, which took home the Grammy for Best Music Film. Although Spielberg was not physically present at the ceremony, he acknowledged the significant milestone in a statement shared following the event. "This recognition means the world to me and our entire team," Spielberg said in a statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.

He extended his gratitude to Grammy voters along with collaborators Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey, and partners at Imagine and The Walt Disney Company. Spielberg also paid special tribute to composer John Williams, describing his influence on culture and music as "immeasurable" and his legacy as "unrivaled." The documentary, directed by Laurent Bouzereau, chronicles Williams' extraordinary career scoring some of cinema's most iconic films, including Jaws, E.T., Jurassic Park, and Schindler's List.

Spielberg's Distinguished Awards History

Spielberg's awards résumé spans decades of industry dominance, featuring three Academy Awards for Schindler's List (1993) and Saving Private Ryan, along with four Primetime Emmy Awards. In 2022, he collected a Tony Award for his role as a producer on the Broadway revival of A Strange Loop, which won Best Musical. Previously, Spielberg set a remarkable record at the Oscars as the first person to be nominated for Best Director in six different decades.

His directorial nominations began in 1978 with Close Encounters of the Third Kind, followed by Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1982 and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial in 1983. He won his first Oscar for Best Director in 1994 for Schindler's List, and triumphed again in 1999 with Saving Private Ryan. With the Grammy win, Spielberg officially joins fellow EGOT recipients such as Rita Moreno, Audrey Hepburn, Mel Brooks, Elton John, Whoopi Goldberg, John Legend, Jennifer Hudson, and Viola Davis.

The 2026 Grammy Awards Landscape

Spielberg's win occurred during what is widely considered "Music's Biggest Night," with former host of The Daily Show and comedian Trevor Noah returning as host for the sixth consecutive year. The 2026 Grammy nominations were announced in November, with 22-time Grammy winning rapper Kendrick Lamar leading the pack with nine nods. Lady Gaga followed closely with seven nominations, along with Taylor Swift's longtime collaborator Jack Antonoff and renowned pop producer Cirkut.

This year, the Recording Academy introduced two brand new categories: Best Traditional Country Album and Best Album Cover. The new country category will distinguish between "contemporary" and "traditional" country music, formally splitting the Best Country Album into two separate awards. Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. explained the changes, stating, "The Academy's top priority is to represent the music people that we serve each year."

Notable Nominees and Performers

Sabrina Carpenter, whose 2025 album Man's Best Friend earned six nominations, will be among the A-list musical acts performing during the three-hour show. Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, and K-pop sensation Rosé will also take the stage. The 2026 Album Of The Year category features strong competition, with Kendrick Lamar, Lady Gaga, Sabrina Carpenter, and other major artists going head-to-head.

Lamar's latest album GNX marks his fifth consecutive studio album nominated for Album Of The Year, an unprecedented achievement in Grammy history. If GNX wins, it would be Lamar's first-ever victory in this prestigious category. The rapper is also nominated for Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year for his single Luther featuring SZA, marking the third time Lamar has received simultaneous nominations in all three major categories.

Absences and Eligibility Considerations

Notably absent from this year's nominations is Taylor Swift, who earned the top prize last year. Her latest album The Life Of A Showgirl missed the 2026 cutoff by two months, having been released on October 3, 2025. Fans expressed confusion about Billie Eilish's Wildflower appearing among the nominees since it was released ahead of the Grammy eligibility window on her 2024 album Hit Me Hard And Soft.

However, a Recording Academy rule permits albums released during the previous ceremony's eligibility period to be considered, "provided the same tracks were not entered the previous year and the album did not win a Grammy," with certain exceptions. By this rule, Wildflower, which was not previously entered, remains eligible for the 2026 ceremony.

Future Prospects for Spielberg

Looking ahead, Spielberg has another opportunity to expand his trophy collection next month. Credited as a producer on Hamnet, the film is currently nominated for Best Picture at this year's Academy Awards. This potential addition would further cement his legacy as one of Hollywood's most accomplished and celebrated figures.

The final round of Grammy voting, which determined all winners, took place from December 12, 2025, to January 5, 2026. Only recordings commercially released in the United States between August 31, 2024, through August 30, 2025, were eligible for 2026 nominations. As Mason Jr. noted in a statement, "The Grammy Awards are our opportunity to honor the people who make this community so vibrant and this year's nominees remind us of the incredible talent that is driving music forward."
