Iran has reportedly offered a new peace proposal to the United States, conveyed through Pakistani mediators, suggesting the reopening of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. The proposal is aimed at achieving a permanent end to the ongoing conflict, with nuclear negotiations to be addressed at a later stage.
Details of the Proposal
The offer comes amid heightened tensions between the two nations, with the Trump administration yet to respond officially. Officials are scheduled to discuss the next steps in a Situation Room meeting. Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, is currently in Russia to discuss the Middle East situation with President Vladimir Putin, following meetings with Pakistani and Omani delegations.
Impact on Oil Markets
Despite ongoing mediation efforts, the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, leading to a nearly 2 per cent rise in Brent crude prices to $107.26 a barrel. The closure has significantly impacted global oil supplies and market stability.
This development follows earlier reports that President Trump had suggested Iran could call the US to negotiate an end to the war, after cancelling a planned visit by envoys Witkoff and Kushner. The new proposal represents a potential shift in diplomatic efforts, though the path forward remains uncertain.
