Brenda Blethyn's Vera Exit: Final Series Premieres on ITV Tonight

The beloved ITV crime drama Vera makes a poignant return to screens tonight, April 2, marking the beginning of its fourteenth and final series. This premiere episode, titled Inside, will air at 8.30pm and features DCI Vera Stanhope, portrayed by Brenda Blethyn, investigating the discovery of a young man's body on the banks of the River Tyne.

Emotional Farewell After 14 Years

Viewers were left heartbroken when Vera concluded its run in 2025, with the iconic detective hanging up her bucket hat after a remarkable 14-year tenure. The series, which first aired in 2011, has garnered a massive following and critical acclaim. In 2024, Brenda Blethyn announced her decision to step away from the role, expressing pride in the show's achievements.

Tonight's episode sees Vera summoned to the Tyne riverbank, where anglers have found the body of a former prisoner. The broadcaster teases a complex narrative, stating: "A tangled web of a broken relationship, secret love, grudges, regret, and fraud begins to emerge. Has our former inmate been served cold justice, or does his death run deeper?"

Why Brenda Blethyn Chose to Leave Vera

Months after her announcement, the actress elaborated on her departure in interviews. Speaking to GB News, she said: "I'm not sad because I'm so happy to have done it." When asked if the decision was difficult, she added: "Not really, because I was away from home for six months every year. And after 14 years, you know..."

At a Q&A event at London's British Film Institute, Blethyn revealed further insights: "I was aware that people who would like to continue on it wouldn't be able to and that made me feel sad but as much as I like my Newcastle family, I have a family at home and I hadn't had a summer for 14 years and I thought, 'Bren, go and have a summer. Go home'." She also reflected on her recent role in the period drama A Woman of Substance, noting how refreshing it was to explore new projects after such a long stint on Vera.

Executive Producer Praises Blethyn's Legacy

Executive producer Kate Bartlett, who worked across multiple series, described the journey as "an extraordinary journey over 14 amazing series." She continued: "So many wonderful and talented people have been involved in the making of Vera across all the series, but none of us would be here without two incredible women: firstly, the absolutely extraordinary talent of the inimitable Brenda Blethyn."

Fan Reactions to the End of an Era

Fans have expressed deep sadness over the show's conclusion, with many taking to social media to share their thoughts. One viewer posted on X: "Wishing @ITV would say it's all a lie and it will be back," while another admitted: "Fantastic show and cast. Will miss that show." Others praised Blethyn's portrayal, with one remarking: "Brenda did a marvellous job of making Vera real, tough, clever, yet caring, happy retirement. Vera, will miss you." Some fans even suggested the show could continue with a new lead, questioning: "Such a shame seeing Vera coming to an end... I know Vera is the whole premise for the show, but could it not continue with someone new? Does the whole show really have to end?"

The final series of Vera premieres tonight on ITV at 8.30pm, offering fans one last chance to see Brenda Blethyn in her iconic role as DCI Vera Stanhope.
