The BBC's acclaimed genealogy series Who Do You Think You Are? is set to return with a powerful new season featuring emotional revelations that bring several celebrities to tears. The upcoming episodes will follow eight famous faces as they delve deep into their family histories, uncovering stories of tragedy, survival, and astonishing discoveries across multiple continents.
Emotional Journeys for Presenter and Dancer
Broadcaster Zoe Ball, 55, will experience a particularly emotional journey as she explores her Scottish and Cornish roots. During her investigation, she uncovers a tragic tale of survival within her family history in Cornwall that leaves her visibly moved. Meanwhile, Strictly Come Dancing professional Amy Dowden, 35, who recently revealed she had beaten breast cancer, will follow a story that hits remarkably close to her own life experiences.
Murder Mystery and Personal Connections
Amy Dowden's episode takes a dramatic turn as BBC cameras follow her investigation into a murder within her family history. The professional dancer will also visit a West Wales farmhouse and discover a valley named after one of her ancestors. Her journey promises to be particularly poignant given her recent health battles, with producers suggesting she will examine a story very similar to her own life experiences.
International Discoveries Across Continents
The new series spans centuries and takes celebrities across the UK, Australia, Tasmania, Italy, India, Kenya, and the Bahamas. Mr Bates vs the Post Office actor Toby Jones, 59, makes what producers describe as an 'astonishing discovery' about his lineage in north India. He visits the location where his great-great-grandfather was stationed during his time with the British Army.
Diverse Family Histories Revealed
Other celebrities featured in the series include EastEnders actor Joe Swash, who journeys to southern Italy to uncover a dramatic family story involving outlaws and their crimes. Olympic heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson explores her Bahamian family history, learning about their migration to Miami during segregation and the rise of the Ku Klux Klan.
Doctor Who actress Ruth Madeley uses DNA technology to uncover a long-buried secret family adoption, while BAFTA-winning actor Adeel Akhtar traces his Indian-Kenyan roots by traveling to Nairobi, Kenya. Olivier and Emmy award winner Dame Harriet Walter discovers a secret intelligence role held by a family member during World War II, along with a serious scandal involving one of her Italian ancestors.
Production Insights and Series Details
The show's executive producer, Colette Flight, commented on the emotional impact of the discoveries: "We see their astonishment, delight, laughter and tears as they discover how the incredible stories of their ancestors have shaped their family, and them." She added that participants learn about dramatic social forces and historical events that impacted their families, ranging from Victorian silent prisons to the American civil rights movement.
Series Structure and Previous Episode Reference
The new series is currently in production and is tipped to return to BBC this spring with four initial episodes, followed by another four episodes in the summer after a short break. This comes after comedian Diane Morgan appeared on the show last year and took a playful swipe at the producers, referencing her comedy series Mandy which parodied the genealogy program.
A BBC insider told The Mirror: "This series never fails to astonish and surprise. And in all of the hidden histories it uncovers - aided by the generosity and openness of a simply exceptional cast - we can find a sample of the incredible richness and diversity that makes up modern Britain."
Who Do You Think You Are? first aired on the BBC in 2004 and has produced 177 episodes over 20 seasons, establishing itself as one of British television's most enduring and emotionally powerful documentary formats.
