Three Missing in Catastrophic Australia Bushfires

Three individuals, one of them a child, are missing after catastrophic bushfires ripped through the Australian state of Victoria, destroying multiple properties and triggering emergency alerts across the southeast of the country.

State of Emergency as Dozens of Towns Threatened

Authorities reported that approximately 40 fires were burning across Victoria on Friday, 9 January 2026. The blazes are being driven by a severe heatwave and damaging winds, creating extremely dangerous fire conditions.

Police confirmed that a man, woman, and child remain unaccounted for after a house was completely destroyed by fire in the area of Longwood East. Several other properties have also been lost to the flames.

Fire officials have warned that the situation could deteriorate further, with dozens of towns under direct threat. Both Victoria and South Australia remain on high alert, with total fire bans in place. Large regions have been given the most severe 'catastrophic' or 'extreme' fire danger ratings.

'Looks Like a Bomb's Gone Off'

Describing the devastating impact on one community, Country Fire Authority captain George Noye told ABC Radio that the town had been severely impacted. He stated, "The main street looks like a bomb's gone off."

Emergency services have issued urgent pleas to residents in fire-prone areas, advising them to leave immediately. The stark warning emphasised that choosing to stay and defend properties could cost lives.

Region Braces for Worst Heatwave in Years

The fire crisis comes as Australia's southeast prepares for what is forecast to be its most intense heatwave since the notorious Black Summer bushfires. This extreme weather event is providing the perfect conditions for wildfires to ignite and spread rapidly.

With multiple fires still burning out of control in central and north-eastern Victoria, the focus remains on search efforts for the missing and containing the blazes before conditions worsen.
